I suddenly want a train, and my own private track through the BC wilderness.

Throw some sort of steering mechanism and some tires on that bad boy and it’d be an epic Lemons racer.

I rode a similar buggy in the 90’s on the track with my dad. Thing was pretty sketchy . We ga ve it a last hurrah at full throttle to the next yard where it was decommissioned and sold off. Everyone just uses pickups with highlift kits nowadays. Makes sense though. No longer need small sidings to tuck these into to allow the full-size trains to pass. And often getting off at a crossing/yard and taking a road with the truck is a much faster A-to-B scenario. All about saving them bucks I guess.

Does it really count as hooning if it’s on rails?

I remember seeing a few of these at a railway museum in Cape Breton when I was younger. Sadly, most rail lines are all pulled up here in Nova Scotia other than the freight line that runs from Halifax west to Ontario, etc that delivers freight that comes off the cargo ships at the port.
Check out Lawrie’s Mechanical Marvels on Youtube - great channel for car lovers, but Lawrie also loves trains and actually owns a narrow-gauge engine that he/the local society runs on a local historical railroad...his rail videos are pretty awesome too! I really enjoyed their recent ‘LMMons’ series :D

Last used nine years after the last time they serviced it? Might explain the “Poor technical quality”.

They run on a 10 mile stretch of railroad that was shut down in the mid 1970s. I don’t know how far they actually travel. The only other rail traffic is from train rides on a reproduction steam engine and an old Diesel engine. I believe they consist of a lot of the same members between the two.
