New guy here, just saying hello and hoping that no one else spent today wondering why the new heater core that they installed six weeks ago failed. Cheers!

Hello!
Heater cores are just about the worst. If I did one and had to do it again six weeks later, I may just light the thing on fire for warmth...
If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

Welcome! Of all the repairs I have had to deal with, a heater core hasn’t been one. And I hope it never is because holy moly there is a lot of wiring behind my dash.

Practice makes perfect though. Starting to feel like a one man dash removal pit crew!
And congrats on driving the Chevelle today. That’s a huge accomplishment!

The ability to take the doors off is huge. Still a five-ish hour job but I can’t imagine what a pain it must be removing the dash in any other car.

Fair enough - I guess at least you know exactly how to do it now, and none of the bolts should be stuck!

Pretty much everything I do, which admittedly isn’t much, I’m grateful I’m doing it to a TJ. Access is so much easier than nearly any other vehicle.
Heck, cleaning the inside of the windshield is awesome! Drop it and wipe.

When i had my first gen dodge durango, through practice i got the dash removal and air box out down to a personal best of 2 hours.

The benefits of driving what is essentially a tractor with air bags!
The TJ is a very serviceable vehicle. M ine just seems to really love the whole “service” part of “serviceable vehicle”. To be fair though I think I am the seventh or eighth owner of this thing and I’ve learned a ton on it.

I removed the dash in a 96 caravan to replace the evaporator coil. The dash is huge!

Now that is impressive. Nineties Chrysler dashes are not the most hardy things to work quickly on.

The climate control assembly alone on that thing is massive!

Hopefully you’re putting back in a genuine Mopar unit. Otherwise you better get good at doing this.
I've been there, so I feel your pain.

From what I gather there are no more genuine Mopar heater cores for a ‘99. OEM was copper and all replacements are aluminum that are mixed bag as far as quality goes. This was a Spectra part .
The good news is that my original core was fine when I replaced it the other day as I was putting in the evap core and figured better safe than sorry since I was in there. Had the original pressure tested and it checked out so fingers crossed that it’s got another 20 years in it!

It was an 8' led fixture, bulbs were fine in another box. sheet metal tube box section was bent. I could have bent it back, but I wasn’t about to start messing with it only to find the lights not line up. So back to the store

Well that stinks, mine is an 03, so it has the revised heater box.

Six weeks? Holy crap, that’s unacceptable. Any particular reason “they” aren’t the ones redoing it?

In my Jaguar if you don’t mind being a little hackish you can cut the pipes and slide it out the side into the driver’s footwell.
