Tell someone you love them today, because life is good. But shout it at them in German because life is also scary and confusing.

Kinja'd!!!

Random beetle, because why not?

How about singing it to them instead?

Wait... this is the opposite of “ich liebe dich”. Nevermind.

If you think about it, the Berlin Wall was just Walter Ulbricht hugging West Berlin

Ik ook van jou.

Because to say it back to someone in Dutch will confuse them. Lol.

I for some reason became enamored with German as a kid. Maybe/probably I read somewhere it was an important second language for scientists.

So instead of doing what demographics would have told me was the sensible thing, and learning Spanish in high school, I took German instead.

At least I learned the wonderfully-useful phrase “Ihren Melonen sehen sehr reif aus” in a video about shopping at the market that we, as horny teenagers, absolutely adored.

Anyway, the thing I alw ays found amusing about the language, captured by this post title, is that even saying “I love you” sounds like you’re cursing at someone.

No wonder they ended up causing two world wars: the other countries misinterpreted their tone and assumed their negotiations were aggressively hostile.

Same here, I jumped at the chance to take German instead of something possibly useful like Spanish, and would have tried to take Russian as well had it been offered.  I like how they sound, the insane compound words, ending sentences with verbs, etc.

The consistent spelling in German always pleased me. Even today I could probably spell any word you can throw at me despite the fact that I have a vocabulary of maybe 30 words left .

I took an adult Russian class for one week. Simply wasn’t interested enough to fight my way through learning  Cyrillic.

Yeah, none of the “i before e” and non-phonetic nonsense. It mostly follows rules, as it is Germanic and all , sometimes a huge amount of rules in terms of cases, but rules no less. If anything, I can try to wade through German car literature , and in my travels to Germany, I can somewhat get by before eventually running into a barrier and switching to Denglish .

I tried to get into Cyrillic self-taught as an adult, didn’t get too far and gave up, but I might remember half of it. That’s the stumbling block, but at least I know CYKA.

I always thought German was a harsh language.

I find Russian more intense and aggressive sounding than German.

Don’t know why, although after living in Germany for a couple of years, i think i got used to it.

I remember when i first got here, i heard a child screaming “nien, nien”,

I was laughing, but my Jewish senses were tingling.

In the U.K. 999 is the telephone number for the emergency services, so when I hear someone say, ‘nein nein’, I want to shout ‘nine’.

I was the same growing up in Saudi, hearing the Eurovision singers singing, ‘la la la la, etc...’, la being no in Arabic, I wondered why they were singing no no no no, etc...

Ye'. I'm British but my mind works in mysterious ways. Lol.

Back in the days when I would ride the bus home fro m school, I loved to shout the most random things in other languages at kids who were being annoying. I once shouted “holy cat, this is my tiny cheese” in French at one particularly annoying kid, and he flipped out, screaming, “WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME!!??” I may not have mastered any foreign languages, but my limited knowledge of them has definitely upped my insult game :P
