I know, no one will ever discourage another person here from buying a decent vehicle, or even a totally questionable one so long as it’s fun or interesting, and they don’t have to pay the bills or lie under it in the snow trying to figure out where that smoke was coming from.

But in a recent conversation here, I was reminded to do my periodic search for my own personal Holy Grail truck: an early 00's F-series with the V- 10 and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Yes, this exists, and yes it’s awesome. Most of them are used-and-abused bare bones work trucks with lots of hard miles, like the one I used to drive for my work, which is how I came to know this rare and wondrous beast. Well, a quick look on Autotrader.com/overkill showed me this. BEHOLD:

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in case of severe KINJAVID-19.

It’s even a great COLOR! Lariat trim! Most of these things are Fleet White, Red, or rust. It’s a V-10 6-speed manual ext. cab, 4x4 with a matching cap, no less. I think it’s a good thing this vehicle is in Minnesota, or else I’d be hard-selling this to my wife right now.

Someone go buy this, take nice care of it, and sell it to me in a few years. Please? Also just let me know if there’s any hidden rust, in which case, hard pass. It looks good though, in the ONLY PIC this stupid place has posted.

There’s also a nice full-crew-cab 8' bed !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in PA that looks pretty nice. T hat’s a LOT of truck, even for [call for price].  At least you can see the manual shifter in the pics.

Whoa. Whoa! WHOA!!!!

So, is that a T-56 behind that motor, in the same configuration that Dodge put a T-56 behind the VIPER? Because, if so, I really, really really need you to buy that truck and send/post pics of the transfer case interface to  the back of the gearbox.

That’s been The Holy Grail for a cult of us in the 4X4 world— a Tremec-to-Transfer-Case... and you just told me Ford built it.

Details. Please. Really, Please.

Because that’s a unicorn combo I really need more info on.

On the other hand, the V-10 isn’t much of motor. My experience with them has been that they’re not nearly as powerful as you might expect. They’re only really good at making noise and emptying the gas tank. If you want an underpowered one of these trucks, you’re probably better off with a 5.4 V8 one. Not significantly more underpowered in actual use, and they hold the possibility of double digit fuel mileage (only on the highway, unloaded).

I’m seeing 9600 V-10s of that era for sale across the country.  Only 100 of them are manual.  1% of the run.  But they did build it.  I’m stunned.

I was googling and apparently they offered 2 flavors of V10. The early trucks were 310 HP and 425 ft/lbs b ut the 05-07 trucks got 362 HP and 457 ft-lbs, which seems like a substantial improv ement. But I’ve heard all these trucks were AWFUL on fuel.

I’m stunned -- but not really surprised -- to learn that they get 9 gallons per mile. I’m not anti-pickup, but the particular truck posted here just says “big” and “bloat” to me. I’d buy a full size van before I bought a pickup. In fact, if I had the dough, I’d go buy the rubberized version of a Mercedes Metro van with the turbo four-banger and see how it did.

I can stop you by simply telling you that this one is actually an automatic.

How do I know?

Well I went on that website in the picture and looked up that truck here:

https://valdersvehicles.com/used-trucks/car/view/1/662

And when you go to the picture of the dashboard, you’ll see this:

Kinja'd!!!

If it was manual, it wouldn’t have a column shifter or PRND321 listed on the dash.

So in other words, this dealer is one of the many idiot sellers who list automatic vehicles as manuals.

Interesting. That ZF was offered, briefly, in a similarly unicorn-ish Duramax 6.6L Chebby Truck version.

The gearbox is a close-ratio rock-crusher... but I think they had clutch issues behind 500 ft-lbs of D-max.

It, too, offered a 4X4 flavor.

Interesting. I had an 01 Ram that had an NV5600 6 speed and NV transfer case behind it.

A T-56/xfer case would be interesting.  I know theres a guy who did a T-56 with an AWD xfer case behind it in a Syclone truck.  Might be a good starting point?

I once owned at GMC 3500 dually with the 8.1.  It also got terrible fuel mileage, but it did make useful power.

03/05/2020 at 16:28

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah. That actually is a start. The intention would be a High-Po Baja Style Manual offroader— the T56 and successors are really strong but AFAIK were never offered in a AWD/4WD flavor. And the tail-housing is a beetch. But with a GM bell pattern up front?  Lots of options.

As for the ZF? Yeah, we actually did end up with a ZF-S-650 in the shop, which I thought was Dmax... but most “manual” 2002-07 GMC’s were FIVE speeds behind 6.0s, so I thought briefly I was mistaken. But, digging a little deeper— turns out that oh-so-briefly GM offered the first gen DMAX with the ZF 6-speed, and apparently a lot of those ARE 4x4. The box is rugged, but apparently it really did eat clutches. I can’t believe they built that version, especially with so many in 4x4— they must have had a contract customer, government, military, fleet. SOMEBODY did a bulk buy of DMAX-Manual-4x4 3500 series. But, it’s a unicorn now. Far easier to find the Ford version...

Plus those early Duramaxes had a lot of problems with head warping/cracking and such. But that would be a unicorn of a truck.

I’ve been reading up on the T-56 and it’s successor, the TR-6060. I am “systems engineering” a project car and I think that’s going to be my goto gearbox. But I have no need of 4wd/AWD for what I’m looking to do. But you’re right, they are stout boxes, and the bellhousing options are great. Just need to figure out the tailhousing - I think the guy who did the Syclone had to machine part of it off and make a special adapter  Google around for it and if you can’t find the info let me know and I’ll try to dig it up if you’re interested . Actually, I haven’t paid too much attention, but is the tailhousing on the TR-6060 any different?

How about the Big One with 4 real doors, leather seats, a real 8' bed, AND a manual backing up a V10?! I didn’t really know they sold any nice ones with a manual. But I clearly don’t shop for these much, and usually only find work trucks configured with the manual. I’d love to have that huge one, but it’s ridiculous. Parking “isn’t an issue” for me in that I don’t park in a city, I almost never parallel park, I don’t park in a garage, etc. but even at my work, I’d have limited options to park that beast just because of the ludicrous turning radius, and length.

Part of it was just spending a lot of time driving this beautifully bare-bones work truck with that engine and the 6-speed manual in my marina days. We all loved that truck, and it got driven hard year-round. I loved the sound of the engine and the manual transmission on top of that. It wasn’t any better at towing than our 2500 Silverado but it was more fun.
