Nah, it might be borderline too expensive. Nobody wants to deal with the V8s, they have issues (look at the laundry list of maintenance done) and are hard to service. They also have a tendency to frag transmissions.

V8? Heck no, after my experience with my mom’s “more reliable” 5 cylinder.
Also, these are utterly disheartening to drive in FWD configuration.

I am (too) well acquainted with my mom’s FWD I5 turbo model, and even t hat less demanding engine is not something i would want to deal with.
From behind the wheel, these feel about twice as heavy as most pickups, and fwd models are absolutely disheartening to drive. It’s just way too heavy for its own good. I will give it one thing, it laughs at low speed collisions.

I’ve never driven one so I can’t comment on the dynamics, but I think it’s important to keep in mind that this was Volvo’s first crack at a “real” SUV (or crossover, or whatever). I love the I5, it’s a delightful engine, if not a speed demon (I have an N/A version in my 850), but it makes fun noises. Volvo turbo engines are usually low boost, I know in the older 850s and S70s the turbo I5 only made like 40-50 HP more than the N/A engines . So I can imagine the I5 not having enough grunt to haul that Swedish tank around. Might also explain some of the reliability issues if the engine is being over-stressed. I’ve heard that the I6 t urbo was the sweet spot for the XC90s. It’s got enough power to move the thing decently, without all the woes of the V8.
The V8s are notorious for fragging transmissions because Volvo used the same trans behind all engines , and i t’s rated for 325 ft-lbs of torque. A pparently Yamaha built a beastly little V8 for Volvo, and when it arrived Volvo had to de-tune it, and only managed to get it down to 324 ft-lbs. That’s right, the V8 in stock trim is basically at the torque limit of the trans. Might be a clue as to why they go bad. Also, it’s a transverse V8 and it’s virtually impossible to get to the back cylinder bank to fix things like leaky valve covers (which these are known for) or to change spark plugs.

Yup, that I5 would a fantastic engine in literally anything else. It's torquey and just powerful enough, but the XC90 just weighs about two times too much to enjoy it in FWD

There’s a guy on one of the Volvo boards who built an all motor I5 with ITBs ! Its got ported heads, high compression pistons, reground cams, and revs to li ke 7500 rpms. I think he was putting down like 230 FWHP in a gutted 850 sedan. It was amazing! Sadly I don’t think any video exists.
