I voted against a parcel tax assessment of $96/yr for teacher salaries, and against a 0.5% sales tax for County Fire, as we already pay 10% or 10.5% sales tax in Alameda County... I also voted for one of the Democrats and for a bond measure for school facilities.

I thought CA was supposed to be this socialist dystopia with European levels of taxation. To put your sales tax in perspective, your county sales tax is almost 1/3 of mine (the county Joe Arpaio ruled for a few decades), and your total sales tax is only 1% more than what I pay. It’s the same rate depending on where you live in Alameda county. Californians rejecting Arizona levels of taxation gives me a chuckle.

funny how “conservatives” complain about entitlements, yet believe teachers, firefighters, and police should serve them
for free. Those people have expenses too, and those expenses go up over time just like OP’s. Yet I doubt OP would turn down a raise.
I couldn’t be arsed to vote in this primary, and I doubt I will in November. none of it matters.

I’m trying to do your math. So you pay 9% sales tax and you’ve looked up what Alameda County pays in county assessed sales tax and you pay three times as much?

Per Alameda County’s website, the county sales tax is 0.25%. Maricopa county’s sales tax is 0.7% (almost 3x) . Depending on where you live in Alameda county, your total sales tax rate (state + county + city + whatever other entity) is 9-10ish%. My total sales tax rate is right around 9.5%.

So yes. The sales tax measure on the ballot wanted to add 0.5%, which would have tripled the county sales tax, it turns out, thanks to the information you’ve provided . It had never occurred to me that the sales tax we pay has constituent parts such as County and Other, but it’s pretty obvious . I like money as much as anyone, but taxing everyone to make teacher pay raises, when we already pay what I think is an exorbitant sales tax, strikes me as too much taxation. 0.5% is a substantial increase. (My employer is a different district than the one I live in, FWIW, and that district is one of the lowest paid in the Bay Area, though the sales tax increase was for Fire and the parcel tax was for teacher pay. )

No, I’m doing my civic responsibility and knee-jerk voting on some issue like no more new taxes and why can’t the local government manage their, well, my , money any better? Voting my liberal principles.
I am curious to see how the McSally v. Kelly Senate race winds up.

When you look at Mark Kelly’s history in the state, and Arizona’s history with the likes of Senator John McCain, I would think Kelly would have some appeal and some name recognition and I would not expect him to be any sort of ideological automaton.

Yeah. My friend was an aid for Gabby Giffords (slept in the day of the shooting), and she was pretty centrist. Same friend idolized McCain.

When I learned of the shooting and the media started talking about Ms. Gifford’s, my immediate reaction was that I thought she was someone I could get behind. I wonder if Martha McSally can slot into that heritage and with alignment with the president as her selling point, it seems to me that a vote for McSally would be a vote to surrender some individuality as a state .

McSally is nothing like Giffords. Giffords was a born and raised Arizonan who happened to be a Democrat. McSally only presented herself as a centrist while running in the 2nd District, because tha t district will vote conservative Dems and centrist Republicans. She’s since shown herself to be a Trump styled Republican, who I don’t consider to be conservatives. Anyone who had any respect for John McCain would stay far away from Trump and his supporters. Barry Goldwater warned conservatives of the religious nuts that were trying to take over the party, and Trump has embraced them.
