The ID4 is still vaporware at this point while the Model Y is shipping right now.

Based on this reality and the reality that VAG is reportedly having massive software issues relating to their new BEVs, I don’t see the ID4 making a dent in Model Y sales this year, next year, and probably not the year after either.

The Model Y isn’t shipping anything to customers yet, and the starting price is still $47k, so if VW can under cut that along with the tax credit, these will make a huge dent in Model Y sales.

Correct, and between VW being eligible for the $7,500 and more of its customers being eligible for it (ie, not all high- income and subject to the rebate reduction ) it will definitely give VW a little more wiggle room for a while.

The physical showrooms will be huge, as well. Tesla just cut back on retail locations, which I’ve been saying will come back to bite them once the EV wars really ramp up.

I believe the VW’s EVs will be well received and sell well for a few reasons. First, they will be affordable. The ID3 is projected to start around 30k euros, which is right around what a new Leaf costs. Second, the quality control issues a certain manufacturer is known for won’t be an issue with VW, which has been known to have good fit and finish on pretty much everything they’ve made in the last 30+ years. Last, and least important because it’s highly subjective, is the styling. Personally, I find the ID series concept styling to be superior to Teslas. The only EV that to me seems more attractive is the Honda E.

No it wont.....
It’s a weird looking SUV from a regular brand.... I don’t think it’s gonna make that big of a splash....

VW is a much more unique brand in US vs Mexico as weird as that may seem

This. Teslas  are like iPhones, they sell well because of the logo. Teslas are the it car like Priuses were 10 years ago.

I would much rather they bring the new electric FIAT 500 over and ensure it gets at least 300km of range...

I think VW appeals to Mexicans across the board because of how classless it is... You can sell a 50K Touareg alongside a 7K Gol with no issues.

I think the ID 4 won’t succeed in Mexico because of how bad charging infrastructure is... I think it won't survive in America because it's weird in the wrong way... The range is promising but I can imagine many people getting a lower end Tesla because of the badge...

Nah, the Musk cult is just as strong as 45's, they’d buy a Yugo with an electric motor and a stylized T on the hood.  I think the brand is also appealing to those who don’t really like cars or driving, but want an iCar for their insta and snap feeds.

I assume it’ll be a bigger hit in Europe than here in the US. It’ll also be interesting to see if VW (or any other brands for that matter) will be able to overcome the Tesla “cool factor” when fighting at the same price points.
