Updated to tell y’all that the f ucking windows don’t work. Yet another rental with blanks for window switches. So I can drive it off a cliff but I better not drive it into a f ucking lake. (5 hours down, 10-ish to go...)
If anyone wants a review of fifteen hours in some Hot Garbage please let me know. Preferably before I drive it off a cliff.

I considered it for a hot second but they seemed to be upgrading folks to Dodge Caravans (not Chargers, that would’ve been fine) , and due to a UConnect/iphone issue that would’ve meant no music for the drive.

I genuinely do not enjoy rental cars. I see all the damages and filth and worry I’ll be blamed. I feel the unnatural excessive wear on a vehicle with only a few thousand miles. And there is no manual anything available, so when I’m visiting the desert in California or family in the mountain west timezone, there’s no novelty with the experience.

That’s tons of bad miles on a bad car with a bad transmission. My friend had a 2012 Versa hatch and babied that thing. It basically fell apart around 110k miles.

All of my rental experienced have been just fine. First time I got talked into a 4 dollar a day upgrade in the spot and got a loaded Cruze instead of a versa or Accent. The Cruze was actually decent. But I wouldn’t want to own one, ever.
Second time I got a “compact” and ended up in a Kia Soul, which was great as Ive wanted to try one out anyways. It was a fine car.
Last time I splurged and went for “Cadillac ATS or Mercedes C Class” they were out of sedans and I ended up in a GLC300 which worked out great as there was a pretty big snowstorm that week in Denver.
I hope my rental luck continues.

You could maybe try Turo? I’ve heard some good things about it. Sure, there’s an element of risk involved with renting someone else’s car and I’m not sure how much it costs , but with it you can rent interesting cars. Cars with manuals, sports cars, classic cars... There’s all sorts of stuff. It might not be the best option for every situation, but it is an option. And you can avoid boring cars...

It’s a nice idea, but you HAVE to buy their insurance or you’re screwed if anything happens. They aren’t considered rental cars so credit card and standard insurance won’t cover them. So, Turo for work sadly isn’t in my best interest.

Turo is annoying because it made me submit both my license and credit card AND agree to a driving record search just to find out the car advertised for $139 a day was actually $210 after all of their miscellaneous bullshit, and it was far cheaper for me to rent a decent car with National. Fuck turo and fuck this “disruption” bullshit that can’t even be bothered to be transparent with their fees before vacuuming up all the info someone would need to steal my identity.

Did you plug your phone into the hidden USB port in the upper glovebox of the Grand Caravan? I was losing my mind because I plugged my phone right into the head unit and it wasn’t working. Was about to buy an aux cord because I was putting 1,000 miles on the Grand Caravan, but I found out FCA makes you play music from the hidden one! Makes no sense at all!

I’ve used it twice with great service both times. You can check the person’s profile and I mad e sure they have a ton of good reviews. Some people treat it like a job and have many cars they rent out.
Anecdotal, I know, but just wanted to chime in that it can be good.

IIRC, Uconnect often (usually?) only has one USB that is used for data, the rest are charge only. The one you can use to play music in my brother’s Ram is in the armrest storage area, the others only charge.

It's worth the trouble if you manage your expectations. It's to standard rentals what airbnbs are to hotels. You can get much better rates than at a rental place, and more interesting vehicles, but there are hoops to jump through. For what it's worth, after the first time it's significantly easier. I've rented an ND Miata at about 55$/day (advertised as $41), a Hellcat for $100ish and an older 540i for about $35 if I remember correctly. All fantastic experiences.

I just got back from vacation where I was given a Wrangler Unlimited. Some on Oppo would be thrilled but I was not. Between the rock hard suspension and the unbelievably gutless motor it was a literal pain in the ass . It was fairly easy to maneuver, though, so one point to Slytherin.

I don’t understand. Without switches, how do you open the windows? Can you operate them via the touch screen? If no switches or other control , and you can’t open the windows, how is that legal/safe? Seems like one of those things people expect to have in a car.

If you rent even semi frequently, being a member of your rental compa ny of choice’ s club will get you out of trash like that. I rented from Avis for an entire year, but even early on, I could upgrade to a mid or full size for no extra cost. Also you can grab and go at the larger airports for no extra cost. Bagged an 18 Mustang GT one time.

If you’re going to travel where its strengths come in to play. Traversing speed bumps and pothole filled pavement does not do that. Add in the rental grade “power” train that struggled to maintain 50mph on modest grades without the transmission doing all kinds of rude things and it doesn’t end up as a fun drive.

That’s a fancy car with some power windows.
I was in Iceland a few years ago and I hired the cheapest (ha! it was €500 for one week) car I could find.
This one.
It had these. Remember them?
Also, if you wanted the wipers to work intermittently you turned them on and off intermittently. If you wanted to lock or unlock the doors you used little buttons on each one.
It did have power steering. No air con, because Iceland.
