Catalytic converter theft has been really bad up in this region lately. As is airbag theft and tailgate theft (specifically on F-250 and F-350 Platinum models on those).

Airbag theft is a thing?!
Maybe they can come steal my passenger air bag. It’s under recall. Takata - the gift that keeps on giving.

Yeah, they are easily to remove if you know what you’re doing, and they can cost over $1,000 to buy new. All you need is a pry bar, knife, and screwdriver to get one out in a couple of minutes.
O ne of the deputies I talked to about it (we had a couple of thefts in our parking lot) had an interesting theory.
He was investigating the theft of the driver’s main airbag, catalytic converter, panoramic glass roof, tailgate, and assorted other bits from a brand new Ford F-350. Fully optioned out, that’s a roughly $100,000 truck. In some cases, theft of those key (and generally somewhat easy to remove) parts can be e nough for a vehicle to be totaled out by the insurance carrier. The insurance company will resell that truck for about $20,000. If you already stole the parts, you can reinstall everything, get a rebuilt title, and sell it for $50,000+.
In other cases where just one thing is stolen, it’s merely a crime of opportunity with a quick and easy way to turn around and resell.

I don’t think anyone is accusing him of being too smart. :)
