Drinking at your desk on a Friday afternoon? Wait, is that an orange in your whiskey?

This whole dual monitor thing. If you’re gaming or something, or if you use a second monitor for a pallet of tools in some application, I can see it. There’s a lady at the school district office where I work. She’s the gatekeeper to the IT Department. Sits behind a pair of curved  2 6-inch monitors, and probably spends her entire day on Facebook Messenger and probably earns like $30/hr because Union. She peers up over those monitors and I just want to laugh at her, such is my disdain.

Ha! That’s what Alt-Tab is for because leaving Oppo on its own monitor is not a job security move unless you’re ForSweden.

Multi-monitors are definitely good. And cheap, even a tiny increase in productivity makes them well worthwhile. Probably just the benefit in terms of employee happiness, retention, and recruiting makes it easily worth the cost, even if there’s no real productivity boost.

Incidentally, it tends to be administrative assistants and the like who get the most benefit from a second screen. People who always have calendars or spreadsheets open benefit a lot. Coders like me get relatively low benefit, but I will still daydream about burning down you house if you try to set me up with crappy monitors when a pair of decent 1080p screens costs like $200 and even a pair of 4k 27"ers isn’t terrible (this may have been an issue in the past. People trying to issue me crappy monitors, not burning down people’s houses).

Gaming actually sucks on dual screens. You don’t want a bezel going down the center of your screen. You can do it with a big main screen and a secondary screen on the side (I recommend portrait mode for that), but in general you want an odd number of screens for gaming.

In any event what I’m saying is that you should put in for dual screens rather than being jealous. It really isn’t (or at least shouldn’t be) some unfathomable luxury.

At my home office, I had a TRIPLE monitor setup. I usually can’t work with fewer than two. I’m usually moving information between multiple programs, so I’ll have some combination of Excel, a database (usually Access or SQL Server), a programming window (usually VBA or Python), Chrome, ArcGIS (mapping software), and Outlook open at the same time. It’s a hell of a lot easier to do all of this with multiple monitors. Even just having two monitors means I can be programming in one window and monitor the results in the other. Or if I’m doing geo spatial analyses, I can have the maps and database open in one window and easily copy the results to the spreadsheet in another window.

I have a hard time functioning with just one screen.

One for Outlook, other for working on stuff. Dual monitor setup is a gift from gods. I had a triple for a while and it was best thing ever.

Ideally I’d have 4 30" monitors. Photoshop, Illustrator, Solidworks, Keyshot, folders, toolbars, and one on the end rotated portrait for web/email. Plus the Surface for sketching. I hate that I’m stuck on my 15" monitor for CAD.

I’m a screen pig. But that’s the life of a designer.

agree - just depends what you are doing. I have three smaller hand-me-down monitors at work and I really do use every inch of space. I have about 8 applications I run all the time, with 4-5 more up and down fairly frequently so I really like the extra monitor space.

Liquor consumption is not allowed by my employer, but honestly I think responsible drinking can be a very valuable social lubricant and creativity enhancer in the work place . I know there are liabilities involved, but they can be mitigated the benefits can be significant.

In my world (finance) dual monitors are virtually a requirement.   The difference in productivity is significant for how little they cost.

This. For software development, I simply cannot fathom using one monitor ever again. Unless I have the new Mac Pro with that giant gigantic 32", 6 k XDR Pro display that would let me look at like 6 different things at once.

I have triple monitors at home and four at work.  My ideal home setup is an ultra widescreen flanked by regular widescreen monitors (or maybe side by side, stacked on top of the ultra widescreen).

I just wouldn’t want that much computer in my life at any given moment. And there are something like seven different screens I look at during a given week. Just one at a time.

If you are running a large screen application like a CAD (left monitor looks a bit autodesky but I don’t fully recognize) or even a honkin’ great spreadsheet then it’s nice to have your notes/references and email up on the other side to glance at.

I run an L shaped setup with a portrait screen to the left with email and one note stacked and the right screen for whatever I'm working on.

My brother’s setup is a MSI 27" curved main screen paired with a 19" flat secondary screen. The curved is for the actual game and the flat is used for diagnostics to keep track of CPU and GPU temps. Works pretty well.

I wouldn't try displaying games on both at the same time, though.

I have a dual monitor setup at work - it’s pretty much a necessity.

The closest analogy I’ve heard is that it’s like working on the folding tray on an airplane.  Yes, it can function as a desk, but more desk space is way more efficient.

The color mismatch is killing me. I’ve also never been a fan of portrait mode. I know it helps with documents, but I’m rarely dealing with docs.

To each his own!

The color mismatch kills me too. I’ve bought two monitors (Philips and Dell) to replace the center one (which is 12 years old, and shows it), and they’ve both been garbage. I’m tempted to get a fancy LG, but the Amazon reviews are all over the place, and I’m not super excited about returning more screens (figure Amazon will eventually get annoyed with me about returning products that are expensive, and expensive to ship). But yeah, it needs to go. The ones I tired were  43", which I think was a bit too big, which means I’m looking at 32" 4k screens (would be nice if there were more 16:10 selection, but monitor makers are heading the other way with ultr a-widescreen displays ).

My company switches between Dell and Toshiba computers, but most of the monitors are Dells. I have two at my Houston office, three at my Baton Rouge office, and two at home. Some of them are at least six years old and they are still going strong.

I’ve tried a couple of the really large screens, but I don’t like them. It’s too hard to dock multiple windows where I want them within one monitor. It’s super easy to drag a window over to a monitor and have it snap to full size.

Kinja'd!!! facw > TheRealBicycleBuck
02/28/2020 at 22:45

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, I’m quite happy with the two Dells on the sides ( Ultrasharp 2415s) which themselves replaced some 20" Dell screens. The 43" Dell had some awful “edge shadows” (almost looked like the bezel was reflecting) that made it impossible to see anything within 5mm or so of the edges unless you changed your viewing angle. Totally unacceptable, and I’m shocked Dell would ship a screen like that.

I agree on the easier docking, I think it’s much nicer to have the three screens than one ultra- widescreen or whatever. I’m sure there’s some some software that could partition to virtual screens for snapping windows, but easier to have it just work.
