I was about to get into my 3 series this morning when I noticed the tire on the car next to me. Is that what I think it is? Yeah that’s steel belt, that tire is about done for. Got to love a no inspections state.

about a year ago I was driving behind someone in a Chrysler Sebring (2001-2006 or so.) It must have had a broken rear strut or something, because the left rear tire was rolling with massive negative camber. Which meant the inside sidewall of the tire was rubbing against something. LOUDLY. This person just kept driving 45 mph. then the tire started smoking. and finally went BANG!
christ on toast points, why do people think this shit will fix itself? The instant I hear my truck making a noise it wasn’t making before, I start poking around to find the cause.

No worries. You rotate that big boy to the other side, run ‘er fer ‘nuther 8, maybe 10, 000 miles.
Those white thangs are “wear indicators”... when you see white clean across the tire-- then that’s yer sign to get on down to the scrapyard and buy another set of four for $50.
My X-type is too a real Jaguar

The tire store was trying to rip them off that can be patched.

I’ve gotten worse than this, but to be fair it was excess inner shoulder wear on a lowered car that wouldn’t hold alignment (hard to notice unless you’re looking for it) . Drove fine, and the outer shoulder still had ~30% left.
That’s just nylon. Don’t worry until you see the steel! /s

So big government liberal that I am, I’d like to have sensors embedded in the road (or maybe to the side of the road, though current systems are in the surface) to detect this, alert the driver and then fine them if they are detected again after a week or so (possibly it should be even more aggressive for something like this, but ideally you’d be catching people before it got this bad).

Good god. These are the reasons I’ll stay in when the roads are bad. Our Yukon and Wrangler have zero issues driving through anything we’ll see on the road here....but THAT guy is on the road too, and I doubt he can stop in it without hitting me.

It could be that t he rear toe is WAY out of whack... or that there’s some serious body damage throwing me off ... or, OR: that i s indeed a FRONT tire . Y’know, the place where the turning and most of the braking happens.

Aah the old bologna skins. I dont worry about me in bad weather or (cough) a little buzzed...its the idiots who cant maintain their vehicles (linglong tires do exist) or cant obey signage/lights. I only drive 10k miles in 15 months coordinating errands with commute 90% of the time. Unfortunately its rush hour, amateur hour, or both

My favorite is when they come into the shop with all 4 looking like that, and
won’t pay for new tires but still want to waste money paying for a rotation.

Parked next to an older Lexus recently and noticed the same thing. The owner happened to be about to get in and I said something. She seemed surprised. “How can you tell” she asked. She seemed surprised when I told her how they were the worst set of tires I had seen in a long time.

Got to love a no inspections state.
Maine has annual inspections, yet you’ll find plenty of cars with tires like this.
