Looks like after the Portland trip the high pressure Fuel pump is on the fritz, on first starts it wont produce the 1000psi it should until you start moving. If you dont get moving the car will go into limp mode with only about 80psi of rail pressure. Good news is everything else has been working.
T he mini begs for more money

Welcome to the world of direct injection? Takes a lot of pressure to spray into a compressing/compressed cylinder. I assume that’s what’s going on here.

You going to do the fuel pump? If it’s anything like it was on our R53, I wouldn’t do it again haha.

It takes a lot of pressure to get the needed atomization of the fuel directly into the cylinder versus first spraying it against the back side of a valve and counting on the swirl effect of being drawn in the cylinder like traditional fuel injection.

That’s for beginners. Common rail diesels use something like 2,000 bar, never mind psi.

Yeah, under the seat right? For some reason I’m remembering that I had to do something in the bay that required “service mode” + a few steps. A relay maybe? I’m going back a ways.

At what point does this get traded for a 2004 Audi Allroad with 200,000 miles because it is more reliable?

It’s a 30 minute job at this point, remove the air filter, disconnect fuel lines , and 3 bolts

The hpfp is remarkably easy, right there on the top of the motor.

Ill start with the hpfp on the engine since when that's not working the car is still able to maintain 80psi

Its under the seat yeah. We didn't mess with any relay on the E46 which is basically the same as a 1st gen Mini, electrically.
