I genuinely forgot that the Electric Smart ForTwo was a thing. The pricing is great for what you get and it has suddenly moved into the running as my next commuter.
That’s a great price, compared to some of the stuff I’ve seen for electric cars. It really appeals to me!
Update: HELLO YOU.
Brand new for $10K off MSRP?

Those are pretty close in pricing to the Smart and the smarts are much newer with less mileage. But yeah, those are in the running too

I mean, I’ve never had one, so my opinion means nothing. That said, from all I’ve read, there are other cars that give you more oomph with more storage, greater comfort, and higher mpg for less or the same money. My understanding is that the only reason to buy one of these is if you are especially in love with its unique cuteness enough to be willing to drive a penalty box.

I know the 500e back seats are tiny, but its nice to have the extra 2 seats in a pinch. What do they go for used up there in a private sale ?

Fiats seem to be around $15-19K depending on mileage (30,000km and down). I still think that the 500 is the best bet overall. I don’t want to spend extra after trading in my Forte.
Did you ever go forward with the Abarth decal with the lighting bolt tail? I’d 100% want that on mine

Ouch, that’ s steep. They’re usually around 7-10K down here, granted US, not Canadian monies .
I need to get back to that decal. It’s sooo cool

$10KUSD is like 13,500 here. Also cars typically cost more in Canada and more in Vancouver.
I still think I am really drawn to the 500, if I go through with it, we should go halfsies on decals

I’ve seen a 500e in Electric Blue near where I live where the owner installed wheels from the Sport trim regular 500 and it looks spectacular.
So this:

From reading the comments it seems like the Fiat 500 is also on your list of potentials - having owned one and DD’d one for 2 years (2014 Abarth cabrio), I would possibly steer clear unless you find a fantastic deal. I basically bought it for the exhaust note (dumb) and loved that, but the cheap materials (ESPECIALLY on the interior, my god) and overall FCA quality was lacking.
I should mention - I bought it with 4000 miles and sold it at around 20000. Wayyyyy too many things were falling apart/wearing out for only 20000 miles. No catastrophic failures or expensive repairs, but small things that really started to annoy me. That said, it was fun to drive like a hoonigan and still average 26 MPG.
Upgraded to a 2016 6MT GTI Audobahn last year, and the difference is night and day.

Agreed! Halfsies it is

Oh! Yes!
I am partial to the Orange that came on the 500e
Maybe with...white wheels? Likely not. I think your example is more realistic for wheel choice.

And if
he wants to fit into tight parking spots that no other cars will fit into.

An Egolf is a serious competitor. We have a mk7 Golf Wagon and I’d love an electric version of that.
Have there been mechanical issues with your Fiat?

Fair. I don’t know how much of a problem that is for him on a daily basis. Only he can say.

Love an e-golf! Haven’t driven one or know anyone who has one (rare here in Minnesota), but would be a great package for a DD.
There was a small coolant leak as well as a small vacuum leak on the Abarth when I traded it in - nothing major (dealer didn’t even catch either on trade-in) , but still definitely annoying after only 20,000 miles.
Dat exhaust tho!

Oh man, that exhaust . I nearly bought one twice

I thought the Smart ForTwo ED only had a range of 100 km or so?

that’s how they get ya!!!
Also good luck with the job hunt - I’m 27 but have been laid off four separate times, now I’m at a great gig. Forward momentum and a positive attitude is the best advice I can give. It’ll happen!

COUGH e-GOLF. COUGH COUGH.
Also, FREE CHARGING: https://insideevs.com/news/400839/electrify-canada-free-charging-egolf/

That’s for new though, Egolfs might be outside of the price range

No! No! No! These are crap! They’re constantly breaking. We’re putting software, batteries, and motors in them left and right.
Edit to add: I liked these a lot when they first came out. Genuinely seems like a nice little car. Previous gen was fun to drive, but crap inside, not unreliable. Figured this was the next step, and much nicer inside. It is much nicer inside and drives much better. But literally everything else is worse. Do not own one outside of warranty. Do not use one as an only car. Do not own one of you need to go more than 50 miles on a charge regularly. Even the warranty thing gives me pause, they're not covering everything on them. Lease for shortish commutes only.

Not too much of an issue, but what AMGtech has said pretty much has scratched this off the list

Holy crap. Yeah, that’s a no.

Oh boo.
Does Canada (or provinces) offer huge incentives off new EVs like the US and California?

BC does, more than anyone else yeah. Something I am looking into!
