D addy/daughter week continues. Yesterday was “mommy and me”, and we got there a few minutes late. Ma de slightly later by my kiddo wanting to walk on her own. Daddy also had no i dea where TF to go, we (I) almost decided to ditch! She knew where to go eventually. Car content: Saw a new Porsche Speedster in some sort of flat grey on the way! I’ll have to pull a pic off my dash cam.
After school we we’re walking to the car and talking when she noticed a few kids gravitating toward a puddle as their parents pulled them away. Some of you may think of this as just a standard occurrence, but for me it was a pivotal moment in time. What do I do?
“I’m inclined to let this little girl play in that puddle if she wants.” I thought as I squatted down next to her and said, “What’s that you’re looking at?” “Puddle.” she said sweetly. We wandered over to it and she stepped toward the edge of the puddle slowly, looking up to me for approval with the same smile that I smile when I’m about to do something bad. “Go ahead.” I said.
Anyone driving by for the next 15 minutes probably got a good laugh. We were soaked up to our knees. I had a change of clothes for the munchkin in the Alltrack, but dad had to ride home wet. As I’m buckling her in, she smiles at me and screams “HAPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!”. Can’t beat that.
So what say you oppo? I’m not saying you let your kids play in every puddle, but sometimes ya gotta.

Too many days are dry. Gotta enjoy the puddles.
I let my daughter do the same thing all the time.

If you want to jump in muddy puddles, you MUST wear your boots!
(That’s basically our rule also)

I'm the adult that still splashes in puddles whenever the opportunity arises.

While I wouldn’t advocate swimming in it, I did take my son out to ride our bikes through the shallow waters on our street during the 2016 floods.

Yesterday my kids were playing in the driveway, and started to make mud by redirecting water flow into one area. My daughter was almost up to her ankles in it, in her sneakers. I said “haha maybe next time wear boots? When you come in let’s toss those in the shower.” And made a game out of cleaning them in our shower when they came in.
Also, one of my favorite videos I have of our daughter is her splashing in a puddle at like, age 1. So I think it’s clear where I stand on that one.

A parents job is to keep their kids from danger. If we make our children’s decisions for them, they’ll never learn why we are making those decisions for them.
T
hus,
at some point when the consequences
are much higher, they’ll
make the mistake we would have usually stopped
. With all that said, let the kid jump, then teach them the beauty of rubber boots (there is nothing in life worse than wet shoes and especially socks)
and jump with them.

Thrift stores for cheap shoes they’re gonna grow out of soon anyway. Jump in all the things.

That’s great. I can’t imagine keeping my daughter away from the unlimited joy a puddle provides. There was a particularly disgusting puddle in a parking garage I steered her away from, but otherwise it’s fair game.

lol oh were talking about car puddles? I always do that. As a kid a huge puddle would collect behind the local K-Mart after a big rain. My mom would drive us down there just to whip through that puddle in her jeep!

I consider it the adult application. That said, I’ll still walk through a puddle on foot if the right opportunity arises on my occasion.
