Pulled some sub duty this morning, and had the kids building bridges with newspapers (hence the ad I stumbled upon). Brought back memories of smelling ink while slinging paper early in the morning. Here’s a great video documenting the work of pressmen at the NYT.
Lotta similarities between the print world and the auto world. They mention having to search for parts on Ebay because the manufacturers are out of business. I had to the the same thing many a time for the envelope converters we had. They were around fifty years old. The last press we ran was a newer Komori, and the electronic were the only thing to ever break on it. They were also the only things we couldn’t fix ourselves.

In time, you can become permanent, then be your own substitute on certain days.

This is my first year teaching full time (taught part time for six years) . I teach everything from 1st grade STEM to high school weight lifting.
I should be finishing up my graduate degree next Fall and moving into another field. In my experience, primary education in this state is too exploitative both of the teachers and the students.

Which state?
The thing about “another field” is that it’s harder to take vacation. Or take up pursuits secondary to the Jayo-Bee. A lifestyle choice. I’ve driven from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back three times with my family in the van, twice, pulling a pop-up trailer. That was fun.
That last one was next to I-40 in Nebraska somewhere. We were chasing a tornadic storm cell about fifty miles ahead.

Arizona. That’s true about the lifestyle change. We’ve roadtripped/camped/backpacked extensively over the last nine years all over the US, Europe and Hawaii. But to be able to afford that my wife and I have both worked multiple jobs.

The Wall Street Journal will survive, as will some others, but how many newspapers (print or otherwise) will be left in the U.S. at the end of the decade?
I’m afraid we’ll get to a point where only cities with a population of like
3 million or more will be able to sustain them.

If you haven’t already, print this big and hang it up on your wall.

Love it.
Here’s one of me - I need to take some of them like this.
