This one in Milwaukee. At least seven fatalities, according to the Wall Street Journal. What is wrong with our world?

Its an ongoing slow motion riot, each shooting that happens lowers the threshold for s omeone to commit the next one

Psychopaths have unprecedented access to media to both observe and be observed through constant social media interactions and mass media blarings, and know that they too can be famous for a day all while living out their deranged fantasy.

(locking the door behind me since I made it here before this became politics)

Read facebook comments on any story linked to politics or socio-economics, and you’ll wonder how it doesn’t happen more frequently.    Even if a minuscule fraction of a percent of the wackos have potential to be violent, with the huge amount of wackos out there combined with a history of stupid laws, well, here we are.

I don’t see why legit news sites even have comments sections anymore.

I like fb the most, so I can read a comment, test my assumptions about the poster, then view their info for confirmation. Sometimes I am wrong, but most of the time I’m a good guesser.

What is wrong with our world?

Short answer: People. But honestly not that many.

E very day 300 million people in the US go about their lives without going on a murderous rampage. It’s the one or two who do, that dominate our news and grab everyone’s attention with the bombastic attitude that “THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN IN OUR SOCIETY”

The modern era with our constant global connectivity and spread of news from one locality to everywhere on the planet within minutes, tends to amplify the significance and prevalence of mass murderers.

agree - I work downtown in a major west coast city and we recently had a shooting situation. The overwhelming commentary by fellow employees was along the lines of, “it’s never been this bad,” “our city has turned into a terrible place,” etc. Except that is completely false - 30 years ago it was a festering hole of bars, strip joints and was basically empty after 5:30 PM. Now it is vibrant and full of people, except we occasionally have some crime.

One of the local small time dealers panhandles in front of our building occasionally and the very same fellow employees frequently freely give her money. The very same people that are most concerned about the crime are so uninformed they actively, directly promote it. Mind you, these are intelligent, professional adults making terrible decisions directly contradictory to their own self interest and concerns. Ahh ... humanity.

There was a time when you could send a letter to the editor, but emotionally had to give your real name and the letters were screened. The idea of letting any anonymous idiot post on a news site is madness.

I think it’s not paying attention to those at risk. And with our current system, there isn’t a lot you can do without their explicit permission. Overall though, I think it is a by product of our increasingly broken homes.

Yeah, anonymous shit-stirring is a problem, hard to believe it is allowed.

I find it amusing that the fb comments usually aren’t anonymous, many with repugnant views have no problem letting the world know of their level of awful. Of course, many a fb profile is a fake as well, when you ask someone to meddle with your system, sometimes they take you up on that.

My reaction is to wait until we read more but I realize you are commenting more broadly and my rhetorical was also pretty broad. All of the information, seems to me, at once gives people more attention while also making them feel lost, swallowed up.

How many mass shootings occur at titty bars? People usually seem pretty happy there.

Also, how the hell was a place filled with bars and strip joints empty at 5:30? And dealers letting panhandlers crows their corner? What sort of weird place do you live in?

Sounds like the weirdness of your city has led people to shoot their coworkers.

I’m thinking that might be an different kind of relationship, (and I’d probably argue more positive,) going on there. Most of those guys I’ve talked to are transient labor willing to work all day for something less than legally mandated wages and hired by small contracting or property owner type operations that are willing to risk an occasional fine to get some inexpensive muscle when they need it. Both sides are aware of the situation and both sides generally benefit, (even if it isn’t entirely legal sometimes.)

So many of the panhandlers we have downtown really are career panhandlers . I personally have worked down there for about 15 years and there are folks that have been doing it at the very same corners the entire time. More power to them I suppose, a fool and their money are soon parted, but the relationship is basically one sided.

really, no joke - drunks, druggies, hookers, street crime, etc . Rates of violent crime were significantly higher, but you are right, the victims were less likely to be just bystanders because there were far less folks downtown. Urban renewal has been very successful here , development, mobs of high paid people, etc - but when the less frequent violent crime does happen there is a greater chance of collateral damage simply because there are more people there now. We actually had one of the worst mass shooting at the time way back in 1983 at a club/bar downtown - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wah_Mee_massacre . But it only affected folks in the club and people just forget...

I am mostly on fb to see family photos and for some hobby groups. Every now and then I receive “suggestions” of local news stories, usually about something happening in Seattle. It’s very telling to venture into these comments sections and see the babble from those who didn’t read the article, and just want to push their wingnut beliefs. The vast majority of these lean a certain direction, and their personal pages are endless shares of material from Breitbart and sites with “patriot” in the name.   Many don’t even live near Seattle.  There’s a huge group of nuts out there.

More like, “city occupied by suburban bred tech bros who don’t know how to deal with the issues that big cities have dealt with for the past two centuries.”

If it weren’t for three companies, Seattle would occupy the same place in the American psyche as Tucson, Arizona.

I have always wondered what statistic constitutes  a mass shooting. Is it number of people affected/dead? Is it the location? What differs from a killer shooting 7 family members in their home? Or is that also a mass shooting?

I don’t know. You think about a place like Iraq or Syria or the Philippines and there are people dying by gunshots all the time. And in this country, where we are supposedly more developed, more enlightened , we elect a man-baby to be president and people take their firearms and gun a bunch of people down because reasons. But for the attention when the shooter takes their own life and isn’t even around to enjoy the accolades?

There’s one I’m part of, correctcraftfan.com for Correct Craft boats. It’s mostly some old guys who know everything there is to know about Correct Crafts ( older ones, not the new fancy ones) and they give each other a hard time about everything. But man, they will help you with anything if you can put up with their quirky sense of humor. People go on there having bought a used boat knowing absolutely nothing, and are able to do a full restoration to perfection simply by reading and asking The Brain Trust.
