A big truck came and blocked some driveways and delivered the Pajero. There are no condition suprises , and I even drove it back to work after lunch. Expect all the Pajero spamming of Oppo to commence over the coming days.
Until then, some initial impressions: Not nearly as slow as I was expecting it to be. I mean, you’re not to pick any drag races with it, but the turbo spools up nicely and it moves along just fine. It happily cruises at 75mph with the A/C on. Overall, it drives largely like an almost brand new 25 year old truck with sightly oversize tires. This truck is going to rock for cruising around the desert and up in the mountains. It is almost comically smaller than modern mid-size truck. This thing is going to be awesome off road.
So far, the strangest part of rhd is the wiper and turn signal stalks being reversed. A new radio will be on the priority list, as the Kenwood head unit only tunes from 76 to 90.0 MHz. I also made a crib sheet until I get used to converting kph to mph in my head.

Ooooh, a JDM Pajero! They were popular here once but a rare sight now. Rust tends to get them.

Including importation fees? That’s not bad

Yes. It was priced right about the middle of imported Pajero right now, and the lwb/turbo diesel /manual combo is pretty rare. Most manual trucks are the 2 door version.

The KPH conversion doesn’t take long to get used to...I never made a crib sheet, just did rough math in my head (poorly) and after only a month or so it was second nature. Do I know
exactly
what speed I’m going? No, but I doubt the speedo in my 27-year-old JDM
car on aftermarket wheels is precise enough for that to matter.
Also, awesome purchase. People keep buying things on here that I strongly approve of and it simultaneously warms my cold heart and makes me want to buy a warehouse and fill it with old cars.

I figure the crib sheet won’t stick around too long. I’ve never done rhd at all before this afternoon, so there is some degree of conscious effort going into lane placement, shifting an unfamiliar gear box with a different hand and doing turn signals with a new hand. I figure I don’t need to expend any extra brain power at the moment.
I'm with you on the accuracy, or lack of.

I wonder how many laughs you’ll get driving around a vehicle with “pajero” written on the side of it in New Mexico.

I'm guessing the mvd won't let me get wanker as a vanity plate.

Ive always thought they were cool. I bought a 1:18 scale model that I’ve somehow now lost many many years ago of one and thought it was the coolest thing. Rarely saw it (that gen Montero here obviously) on the road.

I, too, thought the Montero was neat as a kid. I think the fact that they were really a world truck not specifically targeted for American consumer’s tastes and preferences had a lot to do with why they never sold in big numbers here back in the day. Even the gas powered ones weren’t particularly quick. For the average Joe driving around the suburbs, a Ford Explorer of the era was a cheaper, faster vehicle with a whole lot more cup holders designed for doing just that.
