Subaru is finally building a less slow Crosstrek

Unfortunately it’s just that, less slow, still no Crosstrek XT. They’re going to put the 2.5 from the Forester/Legacy/ Outback in the Impreza with stilts. 30 horsepowers and torques will definitely help, but I’m not sure it’ll be enough for me. If I don’t buy something else by the time 2021s hit dealers I’ll give one a go.

I’m surprised then even did this at all-

“But if the Legacy can get a more powerful engine option, why not other Subarus such as the Forester and Crosstrek? According to Tom Doll, Subaru North America’s president, it’s because demand for those two cars is already too high.

“You could argue, and some people do, that for the Crosstrek we should have a higher-performance engine in that car,” Doll said at the recent Chicago Auto Show. “But on the other hand, we’re selling as many as we can get. We haven’t really hit the top with the Crosstrek yet. Same thing for the new Forester.”

So the reason to NOT offer something better, in addition to what you are offering, is because what you are offering is selling already?

Because people are willing to buy your weaksauce, you don’t want to offer better?

FB25 basically means 180hp/tq, rather than 150? That is barely getting up to minimum.

Wake me up from being put to sleep by this news when they put the 2.4T from the Ascent in this, with 300+ horsepower, and the long-since-amortized STI drivetrain, and make it the new WRX... because tarted-up econo-box sedans are mostly over, it isn’t 15 years ago anymore.

WRX STI needs to either move to something truly eye-opening and new, like an AWD sport GT coupe that beats the Mustang EcoBoost HPP ... or just bow out gracefully.

At least a tarted-up econo-CUV Crosstrek XT with ride height that will clear a speed bump, and enough power to actually be FUN... and a rear hatch to actually approximate a little practical versatility might be something interesting.

In a similar way that a Safari 911 is something interesting and fun, but again... more practical.

Gee, how did anyone ever come up with anything better than the lowest common denominator, and just enough?

This is the sort of mentality that makes me completely uninterested in Subaru anymore, after being an enthusiast and two-time owner. I have no confidence whatsoever that they will raise their attention from building appliances, to actually build something unique and fun again.

How does it go?  W e are tired of slow underpowered Japanese cars, 180hp is better but not much.

That’s the reason I bought a forester and not a crosstrek.  And the seating position for my poor old knees.

Not that the 2.5 is a great engine, but the 2.0 was terrible, so this is indeed welcome. Though with the CVT still hatin on the off-road fun...this isn’t going to be enough.

What Subaru needs is an 8 speed auto and the 1.6 turbo in this.

It’s not going to turn into a performance car but this will at least help it more successfully get out of its own way.

Try a Hyundai Kona Limited (1.6T). If it’s not too small, you may find it gives you the scoot and AWD goodness you want in your small CUV. There’s no manual available in the North America, but the 7spd DCT is actually pretty good. I can attest to the fact that the AWD system, despite being an “on demand” style system as opposed to full time, is very good and with the TC off it can/will go sideways for as long as you can keep the rear from gripping up .

Manual is gonna be a hangup for me. I think we had this conversation when I lamented the lack of a Crosstrek XT a couple of months ago though, after driving a regular one with a stick and finding it too slow. :)

Haha, possibly. I Just really like our Kona, and I thought I wasn’t gonna give up manual either... I mean, I kinda miss rowing my own, but the Kona is good enough that I cam cope.

Unless they make a reasonable BEV I'm not getting another Subaru. Love my Impreza, but the lack of torque and noise is just uncivilized in this day and age.
