Honda done gone and made a Phoenix Yellow Civic Type-R

For the 2021 model year, Honda is finally bringing its traditional Type-R Phoenix Yellow color to the Civic Type-R. Except they’re calling it Sunlight Yellow now. Ok, Honda. The roof, hood scoop and mirrors are painted black.

They’re building 1000 total Limited Editions, 600 of which are bound for the US, 200 for Japan, and 100 each for Canada and Europe.

Changes outside of the color are minor, but not completely insignificant. They include:

Forged BBS wheels with Michelin Cup 2 tires

47 kg (103.4 lbs) weight reduction from the wheels, reduced sound deadening, infotainment delete, air conditioning delete, rear wiper delete, cargo cover delete, and rear heater ducting delete

Specially tuned dampers

Recalibrated steering “for maximum control and feedback”

Gloss black rear Civic & Type-R emblems (ooooooh)

Build number badge by the shifter

UPDATE: There’s a little conflicting information between what the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! say about certain things. EU calls the color Sunlight Yellow vs. Phoenix Yellow in the US. Only EU mentions the infotainment & air conditioning deletes, and only US mentions the rear wiper, cargo cover, and rear heater ducts. Both of them mention the removed sound deadening.

Yellow is a yes in my book. Also no ac? My car has a weak ac system and it is hell but at least I can remove the t tops.

If Gran Turismo has taught me anything its tha Sunlight Yellow was a colour International Type-Rs got back in the 90s.

It could well be the same color. The Honda EU media site called it Sunlight Yellow but the Honda US media site called it Phoenix Yellow.

Not gonna lie, I had already contacted my dealer for more info when preorders were available.....but if it won’t have AC then it’s a hard pass. My FoST is almost paid off but this would replace, not supplement. If I got a third car, one with  no AC, it’d be something RWD and even more track focused.

I think the weight reduction is a bit much - reducing unsprung weight with lighter wheels is nice but I think I’d rather have all that other stuff for a road car.

Probably will have to get clarification from the dealer, or at least wait for the regular Honda USA website to publish more details . It’s conceivable different regions have different stuff deleted for weight savings, but it could just as easily have been omitted from one press release or another.

White is the most common from back in the day but the DC2 Integra and EK9 Civic Type-Rs both had well known yellow color options.

Rear wipers are a joke regardless of what vehicle they're on and shouldn't even be standard, if you want it as an option that's on you, most people don't even seem to be able to figure out how to use them or they are on all the time lol but having no a/c is definitely a deal breaker for me...

AC delete makes sense in Europe since it doesn’t have the extreme summers as parts of the US. It makes more sense to keep it in the US because they’ll have a harder time selling them (also most performance/trackday cars in the US still retain AC like the Corvette Z-models and the GT350).
