The driver is a local, and was an elementary school classmate of my eldest daughter. According to my daughter, the boy ate worms to make her cry, until she knocked him down and sat on him and told him to stop, and he stopped. Single mother. There will be much sadness in the driver’s family as well. This is a very sad story.

I was sitting at my table yesterday afternoon and heard helicopters circling at around 4 pm and learned later that this was the reason. The accident happened less than a mile from my home and the victim was a student at the middle school all three of my children attended, about 500 yards from my home. Can we all pause for a moment and think a good thought or perform a random act of kindness on behalf of this child’s family?

Death is always hard to deal with, especially when it was a child.

I’m left wondering what happened. Was she walking, on a bicycle, or was she in a car? Was anyone with her? If she was in a car, is everyone else ok?

Especially when the death is at the hand of someone reckless and irresponsible.

We don’t know any details yet. Because Missus is an employee of the school district that the victim attended, she received a message from the superintendent informing her of the student’s death.

How horrible.  Prayers for her and her family. Can’t even imagine what they’re going through.  So sad.

Terrible. So sad, so preventable...

Hope they find the guy and throw the book at him.

As I understand it, the two sisters were in the crosswalk when the driver struck the younger of the two girls.

Ouch. We had a situation last week where a mother of 2 kids at our elementary school was ambushed and shot 4 times (to death) at 7pm on a Friday in her apartment parking lot. That kind of stuff just doesn’t happen in this quiet suburban area. The guys who did it escaped easily, no real leads. It’s an apartment parking lot with few, if any cameras.

I was literally 100 yards across the street picking up food about 20 minutes before it happened. That’s about the closest I’ve been to a deadly crime in my life.

The school emails (“we’re providing counselors,” etc) really drive it home.

Asshat driving an asshat vehicle. Could have been drunk and went home to get sobered up to avoid a DWI arrest.

That picture makes it hit even harder. I teach in a school with a large Hispanic population, and have had so many students who looked very similar. Between thinking about them, and thinking about my own girls ... I don’t have the words for it, but I bet you understand.
