my sister once awoke screaming (waking the rest of the house) becuase there was a biggun on her bedroom wall. huntsmen are tough, she solidly hit it with a shoe and it just up and ran away afterwards,

I used to have a truce with spiders in the house. Basement is free reign so you can eat other bugs. Then we found a legit black widow in the upstairs bath. Truce was broken. Now they all die. Bastards.

I have a hard relationship with the spiders. I love and appreciate them, but I found a recently-dead black widow lookin thing , and then another one that I didn’t get a picture of: black with a red stripe, but moved fast, straight down the wall, and that one I’m not proud to say I smashed.

But I want them around, to eat the mosquitoes, moths, and especially the silverfish. I hate those little fuckers.

Take off and nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Oh man I hate silverfish way more than spiders. Thankfully I don’t have any where I live anymore. If they become a problem I’ll welcome the spiders back with open arms. Outside the house they’re welcome to all the mos quitoes, moths, and any thing they can find. After a bastard that could kill one of my kids was in the house, it’s game over for them.

They broke the truce, not me.

I know. I still don’t know what to do about the black widow thing. I tore up the attic with them in mind, but didn’t find any even with the UV flashlight.

But silverfish, man, there’s something about the way they move that’s just deep-down brainstem disturbing, plus they eat my paper in all my archival prints. I hate those little fuckers.

T he black widow we found isn’t really supposed to be in my climate. We suspect it took a ride on the bananas we had brought into the house that day. Michigan isn’t known for black widows. But in their typical fashion it went right to the warmest area in the house it could find, which is our bathroom that has very poor ventilation from our most active shower/tub.

We had silverfish in our first apartment and it was awful. And when you kill em i swear they turn to a dust smudge on your wall that can only be saved by fresh paint.

You found a black widow in Michigan!? (I will keep my 313 area code for the rest of my life)

Yeah, she was a transplant, for sure.

I bought my studio 10.5 years ago, and it’s where I spend my days, now, working my ass off. Lived there for a couple years, then moved, then moved back, and I haven’t been able to clean everything, and most of my stuff was accumulated before I spent my life being a dad, but I still look out when I get the chance. The plumbing in Austin is hard, everything’s blasted through either clay or limestone. I have a super high power dehumidifier that I run, but most of the silverfish seem to congregate around the bathroom/ shower drains.

Thankfully I haven’t yet found a scorpion in my shoe.

Yeah definitely. Brown Recluse could be here naturally, but doubtful and a black widow is real doubtful. My wife said it was a black widow and I was like BS NO WAY. Then i checked it out and went OH SHIT SHE WAS RIGHT.

I got forced out of my original area code 973 (NJ) and have a 734 M ichigan code now.

At the time, they could take your number when you switched providers if you didn’t have an address in the state of your area code. Not sure if that changed, if it didn’t I hope you like your phone provider lol.

We had huntsman and brown recluses in our basement all the time, growing up in Ohio. Those little giants were just a part of life. Everywhere, until the nasty hornets arrived. Those bitches killed off all the other bugs, and they sent my mom to the hospital, and my foot was so swollen I couldn’t tie my spikes for the first cross-country race of the season.

Hope no matter what I can keep the Detroit a rea c ode forever. It’s an ethos. It’s like the inverse of the P in Ptero dactyl. It’s like: the “motherfucker” isn’t written, but it is pronounced: Detroit, motherfucker.

we frequently find hunstman, but not brown recluse (thankfully, those things can fuck you up if they want to ). Hornets SUCK. We had a crazy assault by bumble bees a year or two ago. They found a gap by a glass block window to get into the basement then they couldn’t find the way out. Released a pheromone to call for help from their buddies. all of a sudden we had like 20 dead bumble bees in the basement and they were swarming the back of the house. I followed them outside to fill the gap to save them. Bumble bees are friends and I don’t want them wasted dying in the basement. My garden supports them, honeybees, and butterflies with local plants.

“ Detroit, motherfucker” - well said! If you don’t change carriers, I think you’ll be good to keep it.

My dad built our house with cedar walls, so we had carpenter bees everywhere. They drill more circular holes than the best human with a power tool. The sawdust drifting down was a part of my high-school memory. We had lots of flower beds, and the good bees just hung out. But those hornets, man. They would crawl across the carpet just to sting.

Those huntsman spiders are super-scary, until you both realize that you’re both more afraid of each other. I love them in my memory, and I’m glad I don’t encounter them now. There’s still something about a creature with that many eyes that freaks me out.

Detroit Rock City represent represent.

last time in detroit was november ‘18. Too long and too far between. I miss it.

Wasps are the worst. But I will concede that some of them are awesome. Thanks to living in TX, I got to see what I thought was a baseball thrown past my head, which, upon further inspection, turned out to be a wasp carrying a tarantula. Who lost. Which is pretty fucking nuts.

J esus, I live up here for reasons. these are some of them.

I moved to Michigan to go to MSU back in 04, never moved home. I’ve been here since. Not going anywhere. Almost got lured down to the Atlanta area for work but they couldn’t afford me haha.
