I’m set up in the basement... there isn’t room in the garage for this with two cars parked inside.

The last major task in getting the Chevelle back together is to clean up the underside of the hood which, like everything else, was undercoated (heavily) when new. I’d be skeptical, but where the undercoating failed, there is some surface rust so maybe they were on to something.

The process is the same as it was to remove the undercoating from everything else which is to take a 1" putty knife and scrape away the remaining undercoating. Fortunately, most (but not all) of this is very dried out and near failure, so it comes of relatively easy compared to stuff which is still moist and goopy .

I’m currently about halfway through, and it’s been a pain in the ass (and shoulders) . It’ll take another couple day’s worth of evenings to finish scraping the hood clean. Once that is done, it will go out to the garage (displacing the 4runner for a couple days) to be degreased, have the surface rust sanded out and generally be prepped for paint, and get painted black before getting bolted back onto the car.

Speaking of the car,

The old bumper is back on, it’s in good enough shape for the time being; when the whole car gets painted the bumper will get re-chromed or replaced.

Other than fluids and a couple very small items (air in the tires, a piece of weatherstripping at the rear of the hood) it is ready to go. The engine will be fired up for the first time... uh... soon. Probably next weekend. Not in a huge hurry since it’s not like I can take it anywhere without the hood ( too many cops ) and it’s still winter anyways, so the only place it’ll be going anytime soon is into storage because reasons .

That’s really coming together.

I suppose something like sand blasting would be too harsh to take the undercoating off?

Pretty sure hoods are optional. Never heard of a ticket for lack of hood.

Very nice, i have driven an old car with a v8 with out the hood before, i feel like the lack of a hood encourages you to drive it slightly reckless, would not recomend in winter

You would go through a ton of material (and can’t re-use it since it’s all gummed up with undercoating) , and sandblasting large flat piece of sheetmetal tends to warp things

It finally is. Hopefully things go smoothly for once with getting it buttoned up and over into storage in the next couple weeks

That would make sense. I've never done any sandblasting, but it sounds like something I should learn more about.

I have done it with borrowed equipment, it’s amazing. Unfortunately I don’t have room for a cabinet so it’s pretty impractical for me to do at home. If I ever build my mega-shop, there will be space for a nice blast cabinet and dust collection system.

Ive always wanted to try some skyline chili... I grew up in the nanny state of California and we never got hassled for missing body parts but when you drive prewar cars cops tend to give you a break everywhere.
