My brother, the black sheep who is still good, recently moved to Reno to make fancy-ass kitchen knives. He had been living in DC with no car and needed a vehicle. He wants to hit ski hills and cart around crap so crossover it was.

He had been looking at cheaper older stuff but he really hoped to get something new-ish, reliable and with at least some warranty. He ended up with this CPO 2018 Kia Sportage LX AWD (the base model) with the popular equipment and tech packages. 17" wheels, cloth seats and no sunroof, none of which I think are necessarily bad things, and otherwise pretty well equipped. Even on the base model with a couple packages, Kia isn’t stingy with the options.

I like the Sportage. Sure, it looks weird and it’s not as premium or nice-handling as my wife’s Mazda CX-5, but it’s a good honest un-fussy comfy efficient reliable crossover with an actually-decent awd system complete with a sorta-kinda center diff lock button, and weird styling. In a cool copper color which has led my brother to name it his doodoo brown poopmobile. As I said, he is good.

It does have some shitty-ass Ironman Radial RB-12 tires on it, a.k.a. the cheapest fucking tires the dealer could find so they could say new tires, that are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and probably also in snow. So he’ll be getting tires after he gets a couple paychecks but they are sufficient for a month or two.

It has 30k miles , a year of bumper to bumper warranty, and extends the original powertrain warranty to 10 years 100k miles from original in-service date. He paid $16,755, which feels like a fine deal, but it’s a little weird because that was the advertised internet price “discounted” $2,685 from $19,440 ( suuuure ) and they basically refused to haggle. But, I don’t think he got hosed, that seems like a decent enough price, and dealers have b een moving towards minimal haggling on used cars for a minute now.

Congrats on the new job, city, and car, stupid-ass bro.

UPDATE : A couple pics from my brother instead of the ones I grabbed from the dealer’s website.

Seems like a good deal for something that has AWD and won’t cause him many headaches with the CPO warranty. Especially since I was reading an article recently about how sparse the market for cars under $20k is.

... moved to Reno to make fancy-ass kitchen knives...

Wow. That’s a hell of a statement. If in fact Reno is the home of a maker of fancy-ass kitchen knives, then it’s conceivable that Reno might have something to recommend it because prior to reading that, I wouldn’t have been able to think of anything , except maybe an automobile collection on view somewhere...

Regarding the purpose for your post, I’ve never thought of Kia as anything but a solid brand and not the most expensive.

Like is he forging the knives?

Also I can’t believe that exterior and interior is from 2018 it looks older than that.

He’s joining the production team at Town Cutler , which has its factory in Reno. I don’t believe they hand-forge blades, but the handles, blade edges and finishes are all by hand.

This generation of Sportage was new for the 2016 model year, so...ok? I don’t know what’s dated looking about it but it’s a perfectly acceptable transportation appliance.

Always thought these looked like a budget Cayenne. Shocking how well equipped that base model is. And has CarPlay/AA I’m assuming? Not much more I could want out of a driving appliance, great buy!

The full-on base LX is a little basic, but, it’s a base model. With those couple packages it’s pretty good. CarPlay/Android Auto is part of the tech package.

I had a Sportage rental with the tech package and while the sound quality out of the speakers is nothing great, Android Auto works as expected. The only knock I have against it is the car’s USB port only puts out 1.5A with no fast charging support. At least with my phone, when running AA it’s only enough juice to keep the battery level from going any lower but if it charges it up, it does so barely. When you set up a wired AA connection, it also creates a bluetooth connection for when you don’t feel like plugging in. If I had one or any other similar HyunKia product with this 1.5 A USB port, I’d still want my own fast charger for times when I don’t use AA.

Personally I like cloth seats, and 17" wheels are fine as long as they don’t look dinky, which I don’t think they do here. Makes for cheaper tires and better ride quality. It’d be nice if it had a sunroof but oh well. I just happen to be a sunroof fanatic. My brother cares about them much less than me.
