How often in life do we rush toward what we think is success, only to later realize the folly of our choices. At my stage of life, I feel the appeal of time travel and what-if fantasies.

That sense also reinforces schadenfreude pretty often, between “hah! that could have been me!” and “I remember what that’s like. Moron.”
Due to being quiet and learning from other people’s mistakes easily, I
began to mutate into an old man at about age 12.

I don’t think you can really approximate being an old man without the regrets associated with the accumulated life mistakes. Grumpiness and/or sadness caused by memories that make you feel stupid is an essential part of the aging experience.

I still feel grumpy and sad due to things I did or said that were stupid from as far back as about 7 years old. The things I’d screwed up primed me for... not being timid, precisely, but “letting somebody else try that”. So.
I started “regrets” earlier than I probably should have.

Oh good, then you’re on the right track.
I always knew you were precocious.
