Every time, I’m reminded of a 535i that I used to know. A friend owned it, he let me drive it sometimes. It was lovely, 5-speed manual, such a good drive.

He sold it to another friend of ours, not the most responsible individual, in particular at that time of his life. He’s been to rehab since then. He was driving it home one night in the wet, downshifted into 2nd on a corner and probably let the clutch out quickly, causing the rear end to come around. Totaled it, I never saw the car again. Luckily the friend was OK but WTF, the poor car. Lovingly maintained for 20+ years and ruined by a drunk idiot in 5 seconds.

Ooh that’s quite painful. Not to the same degree, but that reminds me of a car that a couple friends of mine saved/flipped. They bought an E46 330Ci, 5 speed, that had been neglected by its owner and left in a parking garage. They spent hours cleaning it, getting it running properly, etc, and sold it for a very nice profit. Maybe a week later we see it for sale again as a parts car, since it had clearly been wrapped around a pole.

This car has been shockingly well maintained, I’m planning on keeping that going. It is a really fun one to drive, they’re great cars

They are great cars, and I’m glad you got a good one and intend to keep it that way.

On the other end of the spectrum (in a way) I had a beaten-to-death ‘93 XJ Cherokee that I sold to a bunch of Nicaraguan surfers who barely spoke english, I was SURE they’d be the last owners of it if I hadn’t killed it. But no, 2 years later I was back (on Maui where the jeep lived) and saw it still running!! I guess a) they’re hard to kill and b) there’s a lot of will to keep any 4wd like that running in a place like Maui. There was a junkyard of only jeeps, that rented them out - I swear they’d just keep scavenging the old ones to keep enough on the road to meet demand. The one I rented (when we returned 2 years later) had 4 different tires and a whole mess of other issues, but it ran, and the 4wd worked!
