This 2013 Grand Caravan in Synergy Green would look amazing added to my collection.

Needs a trans, but the lady says everything else is in perfect working order.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I need to find a way to talk the wife into it, then get a truck and trailer for a road trip!

I need this in my life!

Dang and a quarter of a million miles? That van has seen some shit. That’s like 36k a year.

I like how they still feel the need to specify “highway miles” on a car with a dead transmission.

Please be the hero we all need in these trying times by not only buying this, but then turning it into a “SRT” evolved caravan. Or at least putting dodge viper stripes on it, and making the motor and new trans as beefy as can be for a nitrous hit. That van is begging to be reborn as some kind of hero.

Wait, how is a 7-year-old Caravan with 250k and a missing tranny worth a dime over $3k?

I can’t click, but it’s possible the interior is gold plated.

The dead transmission made me blink; I didn’t think the 62TE was problematic.  then I saw 250k miles and yeah, it lasted way past the typical “design life.” with your mechanical skills it’d almost be worth it.  a secondhand transmission shouldn’t be that much.

Eh, matters in regards to the rest of the vehicle regardless of dead trans.

Besides, the little green light on the dash labeled “ECON” is why the trans is junk.

Kinja'd!!!2

The 62TEs are very problematic, in the wrong hands.

In the case of this one, ECON mode is what killed it, combined with her mechanic putting Lucas in it.

I can get a warrantied reman trans for around $1400, so for $2400 and some time I’d have another van.

36k/year is probably low for a highway taxi.

Hell, that’s low for me, we run around 60k/year between the 3 vehicles.

mechanic putting Lucas in it

more proof that Joseph is not the only automotive demon named “Lucas.”

I don’t get why people use that crap. oils and transmission fluids are highly engineered fluids and messing about with them never ends well. Especially with transmissions now; practically everyone has their own ATF you need to use. I’m surprised an Ultradrive went 250k with that junk circulating through it.  Another thing Lucas tended to cause big problems for was the HEUI-equipped 7.3 and 6.0 Powerstrokes; Lucas oil treatment messed with the oil’s anti-foaming properties and the engine-oil-actuated fuel injectors would freak out.

It really irritates me when people promote these stupid additives by saying shit like “well, I’ve used it since the car was new and I’ve got 180,000 miles on it!” As if it wouldn’t have gone that far without the additives.

Why is Econ mode bad? I did a quick google search but couldn’t find anything

Kinja'd!!! Long_Voyager94 > kgman
02/20/2020 at 12:01

Kinja'd!!!4

ECON mode lightens line pressures in the trans and causes it to skip gears.

The lightened pressures cause slippage which causes excess heat/clutch wear, which break down and contaminate fluid.

Skipping gears with overloads the Torque Converter, which again causes excess heat and burns out the TC.

The 2 combined destroy the fluid, clog the filter, ultimately starving the trans of proper flow, ending it’s life.

Out of curiosity, is this something that happens with all ECO modes or is this something unique to Dodge’s programming/engineering?

Normally, I use ECO mode on my car as a “snow mode” since it slows down everything so that I don’t get as much wheelspin (slower throttle response, slow acceleration, goes for the highest possible gear) but if it’s fucking with my car I’m not going to use it.

So now we’re calling it a “collection”. I guess one step closer to admitting you have a problem. :p

This thread taught me thing for the day, that I should stay away from the econ setting on my van.  Okay then.

Even with a new transmission done by a shop, any 2013 model year vehicle with life left in it at around $3,000 after all is said and done is NP.

How long have you been married?  Are you at the point that you can buy now and ask for forgiveness later?  This is pretty much right up your alley.  And would allow you to get the newer van you wanted.

All over. We got the new van in July, we’ve already put almost 20k miles on it and it usually only gets driven on weekends.

I can’t say for other vehicles, but it’s a huge issue in the Grand Caravan.

Poor tuning choices. Honestly, there’s no point to even have the eco mode, thanks to the slippage, laggy response, and need to “give it” more to get the same acceleration, most people end up getting worse mileage.

It never really matters, because there’s no way to verify the claim. I f there was, the transmission is really the only big ticket item that will wear differently based on how the miles were acquired.

02/20/2020 at 16:58

Lots of in town driving takes a heavier toll on the engine. Lots of short trips takes its toll on brakes, emissions, exhaust systems.

Highway driving generally has the least amount of wear and tear on brakes, suspensions, engines, etc.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > Long_Voyager94
02/20/2020 at 17:53

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, a lot of folks here are having problems shifting in the modern era, so it’s similar.

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > Long_Voyager94
02/20/2020 at 20:08

Kinja'd!!!0

Unless you’re redlining your engine at every green light , city driving won’t affect your engine any more than highway driving, especially since most engines will be turning a lot slower around town. And unless you’re hopping curbs the same is true for big ticket suspension items.

I assume that any vehicle less than ten years old with a quarter million “ highway”   miles has been used for hauling stuff, which puts a lot more strain on the engine, trans, brakes and suspension items. The dead trans confirms this. But then again, the “highway miles” statement is always irrelevant because it can’t be verified.

Kinja'd!!! Long_Voyager94 > DipodomysDeserti

The dead trans is a result of her using the ECON mode and her mechanic using Lucas in it.

Just be careful not to reaggravate the problem. Try and figure out what motion was causing the pain before and try to adjust. Otherwise you risk transforming it into a more permanent problem.

It’s been a problem since I was 10. Leaving my old job it’s gotten substantially better, but it still bothers on occasion.
