Saw this extremely sad mr2.

Kinja'd!!!

If I didn’t have the Miata, I’d have knocked and made an offer. Thought about it anyway. A wash, vacuum, and oil change, and get it back on the road to someone who would actually drive it.

Also this beetle. PATINA

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway, I’m thinking about buying a used Leaf. Have to check for car seat fit, but the money works. My 2016 Civic, bought for 18ish, is worth only a grand or two less than a 2016 leaf, originally 40k or so. It would get me to work and back, and handle around town errands. Anything else, we got my wife’s pilot, the 06 tundra, or the Miata. We’re kinda ideally situated to not deal with the range anxiety of an older EV with only 100 or so miles of range. Thoughts, Oppo?

Used Leafs (Leaves?) have a reputation for losing battery capacity pretty quickly due to inadequate battery cooling. I think Nissan did do something to improve the issue at some point, but I don’t know when, and IIRC, that wasn’t really a full fix. In any event I’d check to make sure whatever you buy actually has the range you need.

Due to the leaf being an appliance-mobile, I feel justified in saying this - Resale value of leafs will be lower than most decently kept up civics due to the maintenance needs being more complex and expensive. Run some numbers and see if the money you save justifies the incre ase in cost now as well as the difference in depreciation once you rack up some miles and years on it. Also - if you won’t drive the leaf much anyways, but already have a decently fuel efficient car, how long would it take the leaf to get you back your money? I’d consider a volt in your case if you want an electric car. Or at least an i3, if you want to go full electric. I think both of those are better cars that will do the appliance stuff as good, if not better, than the leaf, while making the most of your money.

i3? Another oppo was shopping one and they are a fantastic deal used. I had no idea.

They are, though one with a range extender (and the smaller battery) is still probably about twice as expensive as a used Leaf of the same age. Cheaper without the range extender of course, but that extra flexibility seems like it’s worth a lot, unless you know you have a very short commute.

Great deal, outside of "why not?" range. I got a written trade in on the Civic for 12,500. Leafs are 13-14,000, with certified pre-owned warranty and fewer miles.

From talking to owners, there is very little maintenance. What am I missing? I was under the impression that the increased range of new EVs have left the Leaf behind, hence their low value.

Right now, my Civic is capable of 40 mpg on the open highway, but I commute on the DC beltway and get killed. And I got a manual thinking I needed one in my life. Then I got a Miata, and that itch is thoroughly scratched. The volt is perfect on paper, but I couldn't get comfortable in it. And anything remotely approaching comfortable ate up all the rear legroom behind me for the kids. I was hugely disappointed. I3 is outside of near-even-swap price.

Battery pack. Just the battery pack. If it goes, the repair/replace bill is huge.

And I’m not saying it can’t work for you, but definitely do your due dilligence to make sure you don’t get hosed.

Totally spitballing here, but what about the Bolt? It’s similar to the Leaf but I think has better range. But I have no idea what the used market looks like on those. I would also suggest a Volt but I saw that you tried one and couldn’t get comfortable.

Bolts and Prius Primes hang around 20k. Volts and Leafs are 10-14k.
