He could still have a broken neck, it’s just not life threatening. I just watched the wreck. Holy hell, that was bad.

I don’t want say whats broken when only the medical staff know, not re le asing to the media. Under the big umbrella of possibility’s , it probably the best given the situation.

Hope for the best. I wasn’t impressed by the casual arrival of the rescue truck. I don’t know what was spewing from the back of the car but it sure as heck looked like fuel.

My impression was they were a bit surprised by a finish line  wreck at the Daytona 500.......

Hopefully we’ll have an update with clearer news in the morning. It was a really bad accident when you look at how the car was hit.

It was the worst crash they have had in a long time. They probably did small press release so people can rest easy.

Quote from another forum describes pretty much how I feel....

“ Also, Fox completely fumbled that entire broadcast. From not know what to do about to Denny Hamlin, to not alerting Hamlin and his crew on the status of Newman (I mean, during the last caution they were talking DIRECTLY to the drivers so yeah.........no excuse. Also, Joe Gibbs himself was much more worried about Newman than literally anyone else on the broadcast), to going to a shit ton of commercials, to just ended the broadcast with no notes, advance warning to anything.

And the icing on the cake; while Newman’s car was still smoldering and Newman still yet to be extracted, they announced Denny as the winner, and completely failed to mention the Newman wreck on twitter and proceeding to get BLASTED by it.

And Joey Logano’s crew got to Newman before or right as the AMR guys were pulling up. This is NOT the first time folks have wrecked coming to the checker. Shit, just last week as the “Bash” only 6 cars finished, with the winner’s car looking very second hand

What in the ever living fuck.

And yet, Nascar has zero fucking clue why the viewership has whittled to nothing.....”

I think in their minds it was to turn the attention away from the crash(that backfired) , then their minds spinning around at million miles per hour on how to handle it.

It was really difficult not to think of the worse after that wreck. Still have tons of thought and worries running through my head but don’t feel right putting them out. Hope and wish for the best for all involved.

I do hope they change the rule package for the plate races. The Cup cars wrecked the field multiple times during speed weeks .

I watched the wreck on YT and when the car came to a stop I said, “The rescue guys will be on top of that.” Tick-tick-tick-tick-tick...

Always good news if you can recover from these.

If anything comes good from this the next gen cars will have significant roll cage design changes now. Racing will always be dangerous no matter how safe the car is,  it’s the risk the drivers accept.

So much of broadcast around the race was really, really disappointing. The pit walk had some wrestler? whoever who was ridiculously rude to several of the drivers and had no business being on TV. It wasn’t cool, it told us nothing and it didn’t do much besides burn TV time before the race.

The post-race was just absurd, though. It’s easy to understand how the drivers and teams might not know the severity of what happened to Newman at first, but the TV folks had a birds-eye view of what happened with multiple angles and audio/visual feeds from various teams . Daytona’s known for hard wrecks where folks wiggle out of the car just fine with little drama. T he second Newman wasn’t getting out of the car in a seemingly normal timeframe was the second Fox should’ve turned it down a bit. The silence over Newman’s status while Hamlin was shown celebrating was deafening.

I like Gordon in the commentary booth a lot—he’s really good at translating what things are like for the drivers on track into terms viewers can understand without making it too dull for existing fans, IMHO . The rest of the broadcast needs a real come-to-Jesus moment. What are they even doing there?

You know; that was my thought too. The trucks will be there almost the instant he stopped.......... I guess the emergency crew response was “just ok”
