A few years ago at this point I dropped !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! V1 on ya. Over time I have upgraded, added, and organized. My tiny shop is my daughter’s favorite place to go, so it’s about time she had her own work space and tools!
I snagged some basic plans from the internets, then tweaked them for the bench that I wanted.
Next I went out and bought all of the wood/MDF/pegboard . I made a few cutting/measuring mistakes, then went and bought more wood. I measured and drilled all of the pocket holes and assembled everything but the top. I decided to route a nice big round edge on the 3/4" MDF top to minimize scrapes. I did that perfectly. Popped the clamp off and watched it fall off of my saw horse directly onto one of the corners!!! My neighbors got to hear me say things.
I pulled out my new cordless rotary saw and cut that piece up and put it right in the trash. It is my belief that if you are a intermediate DIYer (as I am), you are in for at least two, but probably 3 trips to home depot (or wherever). So while I contemplated my third trip. I had a look at the rest of the workbench to make sure I didn’t need anything else while I was at the store.
I hammered the cleats on the two bottom side supports after they had been attached. In doing that I blew the screws out of the pocket holes and it was just a little rickety. So I pulled the cleats off, cut two new pieces, drilled the holes, put the cleats on and re attached.
Just the easy parts were left, which is one of the things I love about pocket hole joinery. You cut the wood, drill your holes, then you just have to put it together!
And Finished! Toy tools arrive tonight and I will pick up pegboard hooks at lunch. It’s covered by a sheet right now, but I plan to show it to her tonight or tomorrow if it’s too late by the time I get it setup.
Car content: My daughter and I took the Alltrack through the car wash. It’s a brand new car wash and if you go for the $15 wash the fuckin’ thing goes into disco mode when you go through. She
loves
it! I always bump

when we go through and we dance.

You’re encouraging me to hurry my ass up and go ahead and build the D&D table i’ve got about 80% designed.

That is a really nice workbench for a kiddo. Makes me feel like I need to get my kids into the shop more.
One issue I have is anything the older one does, the younger one wants to do too. It’s very very different having two kids both trying to “help” with something than just one. And the older one is definitely more capable than the younger one, which adds to the complexity.
Mostly I need to get over it and just get them involved more, period.

So cool. This is making me miss the days when my monster was that little.

This is very tidy. I’d love to see a picture of your daughter hard at work at her new bench.
Also, Shop Teacher has encouraged me in the past to try pocket drilling. He's a fan

Looks amazing! Going to paint/stain it?
I need to buy a Kreg. I just drill and screw straight into the wood.

There will be so may pics as soon as it’s unveiled. Pocket holes are awesome, if you keep the right size dowel around and you can completely cover them! Put a little glue on the dowel, stick it in the pocket hole then cut it flush with the board with a reciprocating saw and sand.

Very sharp! I love the Kreg pocket jig, I just don’t like the cost of the screws.

Thanks! I spent a lot of time in the shop with my pop pop as a youngster. I didn’t have my own work bench, but he kept a box of scrap wood, nails, and a kid sized hammer. So I could just hammer nails until I was old enough to help w projects. When I was older he made me a wooden tool box and included the tools I always used at his house, some fasteners and a box of brads. I still have the box of brads and used 12 of them to attach the cleat for the shelf on her workbench.

I tried to get the munchkin to pick out a color, but she was just playing with the samples. I’ll wait until she’s ready and we’ll paint/stain it together. The first thing we’ll do together is build her a little stool to match mine, then stain it.

Yea they are expensive, less so if you buy in bulk. B ut I use drywall screws for just about everything, so having to spend extra for the pocket hole screws isn’t the end of the world. If you’re doing a big project however, like cabinets the cost is something to consider.

I recently fell down a woodworking hole and I’ve been learning about how to use different tools for joinery . I’ve also been looking at how to improve my table saw and how to build a better table for my router (mine’s a cheapo plastic one). I have a lot to learn. The big trick will be saving my wallet from all the new tools I’ve discovered I need .

So I have the opposite problem. My wife bought me the fanciest router table available from Kreg with all of the bells and whistles. I tried to used it once and almost took my hand off... I have no idea what I am doing with it. I’ll need to spend some time learning before trying again.
It’s crazy all of the stuff you can make/adjust to make a shitty tool good. I had a cheap Ryobi chop saw that I was going to give away because it wasn’t square, the guide was broken, and the laser was all out of whack. I took the whole thing apart. Cleaned/lubed, properly squared off the fence, and adjusted the laser so it too was accurate. Now I fucking love it!

I’ve got this one . I also have the fancy clamps that fit into the pocket holes (which are not necessary but are very convenient)

Cool. There are a bunch out there at different price points, so I’d rather buy one based on a recommendation than just Amazon reviews or something.
Also, just look at this picture. Begging for a snide caption:

lol wow where’s @middleclassfancy on that one? So I have only ever used the Kreg, and it was given to me as a gift. I didn’t even know wtf a pocket hole joiner was until my mom gave it to me and said “I don’t know what this is but your brother said you need this if you’re getting into wood working.” My brother is a career carpenter.
Anyway it’s super easy to use, everywhere carries accessories for it. I can honestly say I have never seen another brand at a brick and mortar establishment. All of the youtube guys I watch use it.
On the flip side, the Kreg just may be well marketed as the tool itself is so simple.

Wait until the holidays. All the big home improvement stores do a deal where you get the $100 joiner, screws, a clamp, and some other bs for $100. Ya know, at the front of the store with all the seasonal promos? Probably $150 value all in. If you’re going to get the Kreg that is.

Looking good, I bet she’ll love it!
Seeing this makes me feel like I need to get build things with wood more. Every time I do it it’s super-satisfying but it always definitely requires multiple trips to the store...

Thanks! Yeah, kind of like writing it’s tough to get started on a project. Then once I do it goes quickly. I find that the hang up for me is acquiring and cutting the wood. Once I’ve done those things the rest only takes a day or two.

Apparently, although the tool itself is an incredibly simple thing so if you can get it a lot cheaper, I don’t see why you wouldn’t. I got mine as a gift. I didn’t even know what it was, haha.

I don’t have a project for that tool at the moment, but I’ll dream one up. I do look forward to a picture of your daughter enjoying her new workbench. I appreciate you sharing your project with us.
