A drive from yesterday on Youtube from Ambleside to Grasmere.
A video from yesterday, an hour before the Highways Agency closed it due to an increase in water flooding the road. In the video you can see a lot of standing water in places.
A similar video from 2017 with much better weather.
Ambleside can be a bit of a maze of one way systems.
But the roads while often narrow (you also need to keep your wits about you if you don’t know the area as a road can suddenly turn left or right with a bit of a dip) are great to drive on and have amazing views.
Always worth a mention is Hardknott Pass leading onto Wrynose Pass west of Ambleside. Nervous drivers, inexperienced drivers, foreign drivers (especially those from countries with much larger roads, I’m looking at you North America) need not try it, as the road is narrow, winding, steep climbs and descents , some steep drop offs to one side if you misjudge the width of the road and/or the size of your car. Best in a manual and with knowledge of engine braking (yes, some people still don’t know how to do that).
Oddly, yes, coaches do sometimes do it.
Drone footage of Hardknott Pass, 4 minutes long.
Driving it, it’s 21 minutes long.

I read this as “How About A Nice Scenic Drivel” Which for the most part it was, g ra y and uninspiring mix of drizzle and driving. Things got interesting at mention of a ribbon of asphalt cutting through the Peak District. If you enjoy videos of scenic drives like this I’d suggest looking up some of the Tacx RLV. I can sit through a full one of these awestruck.

The solution to spirited driving, is to be the 4th+ car in the convoy, let the crazies go first and then make sure not to rearend the Twingo.
Lake district was beautiful but overcast and snowy when I went. The area does have the worst ratio of wonderful scenery/pull offs
I also learned why top gear hates caravans so much.

hardknott pass is the kinda road that tried to kill me many many times back when i lived in the uk
not the roads fault...im just the kind of idiot that doesnt let blind turns slow me down on the bike...i tend to rely on my reflexes and ability to hear oncoming traffic (doesnt work so well when barreling down a hill....windnoise) instead of my brain when riding
those lovely green hedges aint as soft as they look....still softer than a car tho :p

I think I've driven those roads while in the UK. Do love Cumbria and its scenery...

So me people in my family were from the Lake District, but my grandmother is from Scotland. I’ve always wanted to go but we have similar hiking in N. California and my wife keeps saying we can hike like that here.

Living here it’s easy to forget when you see them every day.

Nah, it’s different sort of hiking here. The scenery and landscape changes every few minutes.
Some pics from back in 2016

I hate to tell you that the weather and fog can change minute to minute out here, we can’t sail or hike without being ready for anything. We have everything from hills and mountains like that to rainforest and redwoods all within 5o miles of the bay and ocean. I’m from Hawaii but this is one of the most staggeringly beautiful places I have ever been, I’ve been to 37 countries.

He must of seen something or wanting to check first as the video continues later, starting with the Bentley and it doesn’t have any issues with the stranding water then. So I don’t know what happened.
First video stops at 16:31 and restarts at 16:40.
