Even if this needed an entirely new engine/trans (which is likely because it may have low compression, which could explain the oil leaks everywhere) , if the body and everything else was in good shape (which it looks like), $5000 is a steal...500s in decent nick are like $12K-14K in Canada, if not slightly more.

Buy a cheap FIAT 126p engine/trans in Poland and ship it over...swap it in and you’d have working 500 for a very reasonable price. 126p engines are pretty much plug and play with a few minor, easy parts swaps (starter, some engine cooling tinware, rear engine mount) and the entire engine/trans and rear valance can be unbolted and just slid out backward as one complete unit. Plus 126p engine means SYNCHRO gearbox with slightly more power (23hp or so vs 18hp in the 500's original engine) and the 500 originally only had a non-synchro gearbox.

I SOOO wish I was closer to Ontario and had a place to buy, store and work on this right now.....you have NO idea!!!

Any Ontario Oppos want an awesome project for a reasonable price that would be ridiculously easy to work on???

I would if I had a garage... this does look nice.

Well, I’d hope it’d be firm by now if it’s been setting for two years.

It does! If it’s not all bondo under there, definitely a relatively easy, solid project car to sort out!

Hmm, Ontario is only 5+ hours away, depending on how far it is from the Hamilton/Detroit border crossing.

I don't really have the garage space, but that looks like it'd barely take up more space than the lawnmower and one of the kids bikes..

Drop it on coil overs, some sticky tires, good brakes, & a liter bike engine make it a riot.

It would be quite a riot yes, but there is a huge amount of charm in the originally little 2-cylinder....slow as it may be :P

You can get disk brake conversion kits for them though!

I would be psyched even if I couldn’t get it, but another Oppo could!

They are miniscule, haha! Dimensions (NOTE-dimensions are in millimeters):

Kinja'd!!!

So about 4.33 feet wide, 9.75 feet long and 4.35 feet tall. Parts are really easy to come by and, if it DID need a whole new engine, a FIAT 126p engine could easily be sourced from Poland with synchro gearbox for cheap....$ 1 USD is worth about 4 Polish Zl oty atm...

Why must you tempt me. A gutless RWD unabashedly cheap car is very me.

They may be gutless and unabashedly cheap, but they are also hilarious fun and very easy to work on / maintain! :D

I have digital copies of the service manuals / user manual / wiring diagram and everything if anybody ever needs them! :P

I think that’s what makes them hilariously fun. I can imagine a little 2cylinder would make almost any work easy. Everything would be so little and simple.

499cc of fury! Later 126p engines that can swap in are a heady 652cc! :P

Simple but cleverly engineered. I love cars like that. The fabric roof wasn’t just to let the sun in, it was to save costs on metal and weight. There is a special hollow bolt (as in a bolt, but with a hole drilled straight down it) in the engine bay that acts as an emergency release to let exhaust gases out of the interior heating system should the heat exchanger somehow let exhaust into the cabin. And it fit 4 people...in a car that small! I mean...maybe people in the rear seats as in legless torsos, but still! :P

The one they are selling is an ‘L’ for ‘Lusso’ - it was the LUXURY variant with such amenities as a dash cover instead of bare metal, a new gauge cluster WITH A FUEL GAUGE (!!! such luxury!) and carpets instead of rubber mats! :P

I think you need to find a way to get to Ontario. You're going to have a hard time finding one closer to you or cheaper than this.

Oh, I know....though I can find a working 126p in great shape in Poland for the same price...such a toss-up!!!
