Had it for a while but finally got it dialed in, decided to convert the old solar car solidworks file to an STL and print one out for my desk.
I often find myself forgetting, and then remembering the solar car experience. It was a pretty intense year of my life. Didn’t end badly, but I didn’t leave the team on the best of terms. I’m still glad it happened though . It’s one of the few things I’ve designed that I still like years later.
The actual car racing across america for reference:
Always meant to do a large write up on Oppo about the experience of designing, building, and racing the car. Might do it soon.

How are they road legal? Is there an exemption for solar vehicles?

Usually kit, or scratch built cars don’t much for regulations. Aside from lights, and seatbelts.

For the race the course was pre-approved by local governments and the cars all traveled in convoys with their teams. I drove the lead vehicle and had amber flashers on the whole time, we would radio to the convoy road conditions and get out and block traffic when necessary.
A lot of the cars do have homebuilt titles thought, my team has a VIN plate issued by the State of North Carolina and has a state owned license plate (state u niversity, technically on the motor pool roster).

Really really looking forward to when companies are 3D printing random small bits for cars. I need M-edition badges for my NA but I'm not paying $100 for 2
