I just noticed that the 718 Cayman/Boxster T is now configurable on the US website. Forums confirm it is available for ordering.

At $66k and change, the T is about $9000 more expensive than a base 718 with which it shares the 2 liter, 300bhp flat four. It’s roughly $4k short of a 718 S.

For that extra $9000 you get the following over a base 718 :

PASM Sport lowered 20mm, ( 10mm more than what it is available on the base 718 .)

Black sport exhaust

20" Carrera S alloys in Titanium Grey (color is unique to the T)

Porsche Torque Vectoring

Sport Chrono

Active driveline mounts (not available in the base 718 )

Sports seats plus in fabric upholstrey with Sport-Tex seat centers

GT Sport steering wheel

black interior trim

Lots of Cayman T badges.

Some of these bits are exclusive to the T, but optioned out as closely as possible, a base 718 Cayman will ring in at just under $70k, so the T strikes a similar bargain as the 718 GTS, assuming you feel that 300 horsepower is enough for you. And l ike the 718 GTS, the Cayman T can be optioned out with Porsche’s delicious carbon fiber bucket seats.

It can also be optioned with the “Cayman T” interior package, which is available Guards Red, Racing Yellow, GT Silver, or Lizard Green which it borrows from the GT3 RS.

I feel that the 718 GTS is the best buy if you want a 718, and now the 718 T strikes a similar bargain if you don’t want to spend as much money. It’s always cool to see these kinds of special models get bits from their much more expensive siblings, too.

Interesting....they were there on 1/16 when I took this screenshot (when they removed the 4-cyl GTS) but I didn’t even notice. Hadn’t heard anything since the announcement in Nov(?).

Pretty easy - sell two cars and boom! Given the running costs of my Z4MC and track habit, I could afford a Porsche if I choose to forgo track days. That still puts me in 997.2 or 987.2/981 territory but hot damn I would like to spec a car from new with the last of the NA6.

All those ‘active’ mounts and electronic voodoo scares me from a long term ownership perspective.

I’m waiting for the 718 to offer up all of the top 911 bits....thereby outperforming the 911. But they’ll never let that happen.

I’d still rather have a 2.5, but I got curious and looked into the differences between them, and tuning potential. Going by this Cobb blog post , the 2.0 puts down 301 hp and 303 lb/ft to the wheels, and bumps up to 346/326 with a stage 1 tune. The stock 2.5 does 338/318 and stage 1 is 355/360. The 2.5 as expected has more low-end, but I’m actually surprised how close the numbers are on the two motors.

Heh, I wish!

981 Caymans are feasible but they just do not scream gotta have it  like a Cayman R, Boxster Spyder or 911 variant. When I start to do the math I could pretty easily add a cheap fourth toy for way less too. Needless car searching continues...

I could make it work if I ditched the 02 and the M3, but I still don’t think I’m ready to let go of the M3. I’m closer to getting another 02 than I am to getting rid of the one I’ve got.

Seriously impressive, and easy to make faster with a tune.

My first Porsche will be an NA flat 6 with three pedals, but it’s hard to argue with performance numbers like those!

What happened is that I became an old fart, had to deal with too much traffic, and was spoiled by the goodness of  PDK.

So, I still love manuals, but just for the toys. Despite the lead image I’d probably spec a Cayman T with three pedals.

With the tune, you’re probably looking at a 3.7 0-60 time with the PDK. Crazy.

These will be an incredible performance bargain with a few years of depreciation.

The 2.0 is no slouch but I decided to look for more info from other tuners.

Looking at APR, their tunes actually have multiple levels depending on the drive mode. Putting it in sport mode cranks the boost up higher.

They dyno’d the stock 2.0 at 282 hp and 278 lb/ft at the wheels. Their stage 1 tune bumps those numbers to 328/301 in normal mode and 341/321 in sport . So their stock numbers were well below Cobb but pretty similar with a stage 1 tune, in sport mode.

APR with the stock 2.5 got 346/322 and with a stage 1 tune, 377/362 in normal and 395/399 in sport . Their stock #s aren’t much higher than Cobb’s but their stage 1 is way higher.

All these numbers from both Cobb & APR are on 93 octane tunes so it’s not that—the APR tune for the 2.5 is probably just higher boost. Cobb’s post mentioned their 2.5 tune keeps the boost low-ish, because the stock 2.5 runs a bunch less boost than the stock 2.0, so they kept it non-crazy for reliability.

Also, here’s yet another German car company under-rating its motors, as these stock wheel numbers are close to the published crank numbers from the factory.

My feeling is that if you want a naturally aspirated p-car, you want to get as much displacement as you can afford. If you get a 2.7 Cayman and wish it had any torque, you’re SOL. Ditto a 997.1 Carrera with a 3.6L.  These base engines just feel so weak IMO.

Boltons will give you a smidge more torque, but any substantial gains are only realized by dropping $20k or more on a rebuild with new pistons, or forced induction.

This is why I targeted 3.8L Carreras, and jumped on the C4S with the Powerkit that I ended up buying.

However, with the new boosted 718's and Carreras, the game has changed a bit. Yeah, a 718S has more power than a 718, but even the base 718 has a very punchy and satisfying midrange. So does the base 991.2 Carrera and Carrera T.

You don’t NEED to upgrade to the 718 S or 991.2 S , unlike the 981 or 997 or 991.1, where you really do want to just get the extra displacement from the S models. Unless you’re planning a 4 or 4.2 liter build anyway, in which case by all means start with the cheaper car!

And, as you mentioned, if you want even more power, it’s just a reflash away..

I just see big P neuter anything that could topple a 911. They did that with the 914, never gave it the S motor and gave it worse brakes and narrower tires... it was already doing 1g skidpad numbers on club race tires....so they did what they could to keep it down.

I think the numbers that makers publish on turbo motors are based on worst case conditions. The last thing they want to get hit with is a false advertising lawsuit.

It’s funny though, to some extent they’re shooting themselves in the foot with this under-rating. Like with the Supra, it’s obvious from the acceleration and dyno numbers it’s making just as much power as the US-spec Z4 M40i, but Toyota published it with 335 hp like the EU-spec Z4 M40i.

Aside from all the anti-BMW hate, people were all like waaaahhh it only makes 15 hp more than the MkIV what kind of lame progress is that. But it’s been tested at 3.8 to 60 and 1/4 in 12.3 at 113 which destroys a stock MkIV.

I know Porsche gets grief for their option costs, and their multiple variants and all that.

I like that they do this. It is frustrating when other car companies artificially limit options and restrict choices

GTS, and T are both basically option package bundles, and good ones.

A bit of appearance package, a bit of combined options that go together, sold as standard equipment at less markup than a custom order.

I have also heard that ever since the late 987, and especially since the 981, that the advantages of the S model over the base model are not as imperative, where the 986 was a distinct advantage to the Boxster S 3.2 6-speed over the 2.7 5-speed.

In the 987.2, 981, and 718 base models, the brakes were not under-sized, the engine is possibly better suited for shifting gears, and more fun under the legal speed limit, where the S models are still very good, but using the power gets more toward autobahn and track speeds that aren’t legal on most public roads.

If GTS adds popular options to the S... then T adds popular options to the base, and takes that more approachable base trim and adds the popular toys to the mix, for less than the cost of checking the option boxes.

Yes, I can see where the T-model is probably quite compelling.... but is it compelling enough to keep people interested in the turbo H4 engine, rather than really wishing it had a modest flat-6.

If GTS 4.0 pushes 987.2 and 981 resale prices down, as first-owner Porsche buyers upgrade, and their used examples come on the market for 2nd owners, (or 3rd, etc...) then a depreciated but still good 987.2 or 981, either base or S model, still becomes a high-value proposition far more affordable to people like me, who can’t afford a new Porsche, regardless of base, T, S, or GTS, let alone pinnacle GT4/Spyder, or a new 911.

A 981 Boxster, Cayman, a pristine condition 996, or an early 997 , even a base model with a couple of options, would be fine for me, with stock sports exhaust, or enough budget for aftermarket exhaust and a good looking set of wheels... sounds VERY enjoyable and reasonably affordable to me.

Wheels are usually the only visual let down of the base model Porsches.
