!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I sort of gasp each time I see a photo of this building. I look at it and think that its architect, Antoni Gaudí, must have been insane. Now, they’re talking about tearing down 1,000 homes in the building’s immediate neighborhood in order to make it even more grandiose. *shudders*

The inside is trippy and only 1/2 the stained glass is installed.

Shame it took so long that the area isn’t empty anymore.

I always describe it as a sandcastle run amok. Went there in ‘98 and can’t believe how much more progress they’ve made in 20 years.

Remember, construction started in 1882...albeit with a lot of interruptions.

It’s far more impressive in person than in photos.

I think it’s pretty cool - Gaudis architecture isn’t for everyone but it brings a uniqueness to Barcelona.

Years ago I was in Barcelona working on a film about architecture. The German cameraman and I climbed the stairs inside one of the big towers all the way to the top on a very hot day. O nce we got all the way up  w e found there was no view, no window even . When we returned to the bottom, the cameraman fired up a Marlboro, took a big drag, exhaled and said: “They stopped this guy just in time.”

That reminds me of a story. 25 years ago, when they still had television , I was watching a show about France and they had a guy sitting there en Francais , pontificating about the importance of the purity of French culture and keepin’ it French. He was from the French government’s Institute of Keeping Things French. His desk was clear except for a pack of Marlboros, one of which he was smoking during the interview.

It’s where Newsom came from... I saw him on an interview with Seth Meyers and he looked like a hybrid between American Psycho and Mitt Romney.

It’s been a decade since I go.

But, it’s the eternal fight of cities; to appease the newcomers and the locals at the same time is almost impossible without relentless growth or massive change ever so often.

I’ve seen it in person a number of times and it is absolutely breathtaking.

There’s a little museum in the basement (where Gaudi lived) with his original models.

His buildings are all over Barcelona.

Parc Guell was really nice, but is becoming overcrowded.

To defend the segrada, when it was started,

A) it was on the more outer parts of the Eixample section with little around, so there before most of all the buildings,

B) poor zoning control has become a shitshow as the blocks have become much more dense than they were 100 years ago.

C) words don’t do it justice to descibe how cool the inside is. Like a giant kale ido scope.
