With news of the Jeep Gladiator’s price drops firing up the page views, attention should be turned to another truck in the midsized segment: the Nissan Frontier.
Unlike the Gladiator, the Frontier has been on the market for a long time. The mild 2020 update won’t be here for another few months, so the only player right now is the 2019 model. 2019 gave the Frontier a bigger touchscreen, making it more modern.
Locally, dealers are selling SV Midnight crew cabs (like the one above) for $7,000 off MSRP. Deals like this are rare for midsized trucks. For $24,000, you get a crew cab truck with a V6, heated front seats, a large touchscreen with Bluetooth and a backup camera, and an appearance that doesn’t look like a work truck.
These features seem sparse, but the competition isn’t much better. The Colorado and the Canyon don’t have a proximity system or push button start regardless of trim, and the optional safety technology is minimal. While the Tacoma has Safety Sense standard, a comparably priced one is a four-cylinder extended cab without remote locking. The lack of CarPlay is normal at $24,000 for midsized trucks.
If you’re wanting a proven truck and you don’t care about locking and unlocking your car with your pinky (unlike me), a new Frontier may be perfect for you.

My dad didn’t fit.
If these had proximity and push button start and came in Metallic Blue after 2015, a Pro-4X or SL model would be my truck of choice.

I rented one for a few day in PA and I loooooved it. I don’t want or need a truck but it was probably in my top 3 rentals last year. (Edited to add, it was not the only truck I rented either.)

That’s more features than my Taco came with, I’ll keep an open mind in a year when my lease is up. Spend $28k buying out the Taco, or, get a new truck like this. Thanks!

I’m in the south. Everything is RWD or FWD. Good luck finding an AWD crossover that isn’t a Subaru.
Here’s a Nissan Rogue search I just did.

I checked one out extensively at the Chicago Auto Show a few years ago and liked it quite a bit. I’d take a King Cab with the V6.

Try finding a used Ranger Lariat or a used Tacoma Limited! Both of those have a ton of equipment and can be found for around $28 by next year.

Hmmm...cheapest blue crew Pro-4X w/leather is$30.6k. Not bad but still can’t see paying that even at the 0.9% for 36 (meh $700/month w/$8k down lol). I only paid $6k more for my new ZR2 (no dual zone, roof rack, fogs, or sunroof though), so still way too much for the Frontier IMO.
Also my ex and I bought a 2006 Xterra (new! - I even installed the cool flip up Garmin nav mount on the dash) and the damn Frontier still is virtually the same inside lol. I mean I knew that already but flipping through pics and jeez that’s jarring and ridiculous.

If the Ranger came with a sunroof, my discussions would probably revolve around one of those.

I owned a 2008 that I bought in 2009. Great truck. Really enjoyed it and would buy another. I don’t see any point in buying a new one though, used ones are identical, cheap, and reliable.

Yeah, but my Taco will only have 20k miles on it when the lease is up.. I could flip it and look for something else.

I don’t remember the exact price (I think it was $38k). I put $1k down and $366/month for 36 months. Sales tax here is 10% BTW. The dealer also gave me a third year of free maintenance, so I pay the lease, insurance, and gas. Believe you me, shop around for a Taco and the dealers aren’t willing to move much at all, however the truck doesn’t depreciate much either.

Yeah Toyota trucks really hold their value. I'm leasing a 2018 F150 with $49k MSRP and pay 372 a month with zero down. Figured a Tacoma or tundra would be similar

Also, my company gives me $425/month as a car allowance + 20 cents per mile. So I didn’t stress too much about the payments. I was aware two years ago when I leas ed the Taco that when the time was up to buy or walk away, the technology (what little it has) woul d be obsolete. Very capable and extremely reliable vehicle. I will never, under any circumstances , drive another Ford. They fucked me on their shitty transmission in the Focus and lost any credibility they may have had.

ooof that focus transmission was so bad... but I gotta say the 10 speed in mine is quite decent (Though it’s a GM/Ford joint venture)
pretty nice setup for your company to pay for your car

Damn lol it’s at least 50:50 for AWD here.
I will say though $28k isn’t bad for a mostly loaded 2019 with 4x4. Saw a couple in the 27k
