AFAIK this design would be illegal in America due to silly regs about movable tail lights. Good job Mercury

Good to see DeTomaso Pantera style rear doors making an appearance though

There seems to be a loophole for this. T he first generation Opel Insignia was briefly sold in the US as Buick Regal. The wagon version had hatch mounted rear lights. But when the hatch was open a smaller set of hidden lights be ca me operational. S o maybe the lights weren’t just a fun feature but mandatory equipment?

I love the MC4. Used to work with the designer of it. He’d  left Ford and moved out to San Francisco. One of my sketch heroes.

The Insignia wagon wasn’t sold in the U.S. and, yes, the interior set of rear lights are there to compensate for the lights that move with the liftgate. This is an acceptable, if uncommon, solution in the U.S , as Buick sold Opel’s Cascada with a similar system. Most cars with movable tail lights sold in the U.S. (and everywhere, really) have a second set of lights and reflectors on or just above the bumper . There’s no difference between European and North American requirements when it comes to this.

You seem to be correct. It seems that some prototype Regal wagons were spotted but none were actually sold. This one has Buick emblems but otherwise it seems to be a regular Opel.

I think I’ve seen Doug talk on about this quirk before and I believe it is a requirement. So they’d have had to work around it, but the design as given would be a fail
