Pic unrelated. Had to remove the driver’s seat of the <$1,000 Hyundai in order to replace the seat belt buckle, and what was under there wan’t pretty and I didn’t have the stomach to clean it.
Other than that, had a good day at the junkyard, got after mentioned seat belt buckle (color matching!) for $10, and also nabbed a cigarette lighter, lugnut (one of the one’s on my car is stripped a little), and a little wooden cross to hang from the mirror I found in the junked car.
In the realm of ‘puters. I put an old hard drive in my home server (a $40 laptop with a core 2 duo lol) to get it working again. Not only is having a home server bitchin’ but the duo and 4 GB of RAM are more than enough for normal usage, not going above 10% utilization for either. Although last night I started to make a disk image of it to put on my external hard drive as a backup, and the poor thing’s still chugging along on it
plz no hacks
or bully me
for “server@server”

Ubuntu server on the server, and Fedora with GNOME on my laptop.

I used to have a Windows Home Server that I built out of an old tower from work. It worked great, which is probably why MS killed it. Capt. Pike immediately came to mind when I saw that top pic.

Cool, I run Linux Mint 19.3 MATE on my laptop and Media Center PC. :)

That’s exactly what I was running a few days ago, just switched. I like GNOME on the laptop, because you gain a bit of screen space from not having a menu bar, and I have keyboard shortcuts
for my most used apps. Plus dnf is a wee bit better than apt.

It’d be work a shot to make another one with Linux, even if you’re not familiar with it. Most file explorers will let you make a SAMBA file share through the GUI so you wouldn’t have to mess around with config files. And stuff like pi-hole and OpenVPN are
super simple to setup.

When I do Linux I mostly stick with turn-key options since all of the various dependency issues drive me nuts. Those are usually Debian or Ubuntu and simple enough to maintain once you get it pointed at the right place for updates.

Ubuntu’s what I’m using on the server right now and it’s perfect. IIRC has pi-hole in it’s repository and I didn’t run into any issue with anything like I did when I tried CentOS. Although I’d just avoid GNOME for a DE if you’re using older hardware, since it
can be a bit of a resource hog. Although MATE and XFCE barely us any more than just running a TTY which is how I’m running it now.

I think you can set the menu bar, panel...whatever you want to call it...to hide in Mint, then it only pops up when you bring your mouse to the edge of the screen where panel is. That’s how my brother has his set up, at least :)

So was it your Hyundai or the junker that had the horror show under the seat?

Mine, the junker was surprisingly clean
and
the seat was
even i
n better shape than mine, but I didn’t feel like lugging it out of the yard.

I did that for a little while, but it just annoyed me for some reason. Although I’m probably gonna stick with Cinnamon on my desk
top since screen space isn’t an issue on it.

I’ve just grown used to MATE and quite like it. I used to run XFCE for awhile, but I found it buggy at that time.

WHS was a great product. The backup solution was great, and it’s absolutely nuts that MS hasn’t leveraged that for cloud backup (though backing up a few terabytes of data would be a good way to run through my datacap quickly...) .
