NIST updated their time.gov website last week. Among the new (I think) features is a nifty bit of magic that indicates how far out of sync your computer/mobile device is.

How smart is your device?

My system clock is off by 1.586 seconds. That’s the difference between pole position and being eliminated in Q1.

Sure hope it’s better than tickets to a regional production of “Les Miserables”. So you don’t spend the next day habitually counting down the seconds.

Had to be done, not sorry.

Could be worse. My work computer is routinely off by around 5 minutes when not connected to our VPN. It’s consistently bad (and my boss has the same issue) so I’m pretty sure the time server it connects to when not on the VPN is just wrong.

Neat. I could spend a couple of hours talking about time and its importance to GPS. If I had one of my ridiculously expensive GPS receivers here with me, I’d hop on the site and test it to see how far off the clock is. GPS relies on atomic clocks in the satellites which are continuously updated as they pass over ground stations. If they weren’t, the clocks would constantly drift due to relativity (thanks, Einstein!).

If my laptop were a GPS, the time error would result in a ~1.3 million miles error in my position.
