I especially love this one. But this livery was only sold in France for some reason.

the idea was neat, but it bugged me how they ditched the Upside down forks and the tachometer fromt he regular RnineT for this

I get the impression this is a defender like bike - makes you look really cool and rugged, but kinda sucks to actually use.

Probably. The only review I watched basically said “you can use it on dirt, but stay away from actual trials.” It’s too big and heavy to be a real off roader.

It would be a terrible bike for a beginner to. I  Imagine   110hp is a lot when you have no idea what your doing.

I have a friend in Michigan who bought one of these new in 2018 , in eastern PA. He rode it home to Michigan, about 600 miles. We strapped a milk crate to the pillion seat, worked great. He said it was actually pretty comfortable for the long haul. This is him on the bike loaded up just before he returned to Michigan.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I call shenanigans on that reasoning . It’s lighter and smaller than the GS1200 which is one of their best selling offroad adventure bikes.

I love them too, but after sitting on it at BMW Welt in Munich, I realised that the R NineT series is a bit on the smaller side. The difference between the smallest GS and the biggest GS is like that between a donkey and a horse (in terms of size that is)

In the spirit of anything’s a ___ if you’re brave enough, sure.

It’s a BMW. It is designed well. Make no mistake it is sprung and ergonomically set up for road use and not loose soil or uneven terrain. The interesting comparison, and why I replied, is between first GS and the modern iteration. An experienced rider after some common sense parts swaps could be gentle and direct enough to use the R9 variant on light offroad trails. Maybe even handle a few jumps like in the video. One look at the controversial original G/S compared to this “URBAN” cafe bike will tell you a lot.  Weight, as in where it is placed, and size, where the wheels are, was an awkward but technically correct summation.  Even if I agree with you in spirit.

This is really a great video which surprised me given the schlock magazines peddle these days. No pretentious industry drivel straight out of the PR handbook. Some historical perspective based on the archival pages of their magazine is as bad as it gets.

What, he’s not even wearing a stitch of RUKKA or a Schuberth helmet.  That doesn’t even resemble a uniform.

That’s true. I guess because it’s not equipped with a bunch of saddle bags and kit the reviewer was comparing it to a dirt bike not an Adventure bike.

Zach and Ari are awesome.

But yeah, you're absolutely right. Suspension tuning and steering geometry have a hell of a lot more to do with off-road capability than weight.

Thanks, hope I was able to establish a  clear line that BMW wouldn’t have given it a “ G/S”, as opposed to “ GS”, naming convention without reason.

That French one is hot. Damn. Mix/ match wheels,   rocker covers, and seat color really make the look.

I’m not sure on your response, I haven’t said the Urban G/S is anything only that “size and weight” isn’t a valid reason as to why it isn’t capable off road.
Your video shows people doing insane things carrying the big heavy GS1200 through Thailand, and we know people ride them off road all over the world.. would I ride circles around them on a DR? sure. But it’s still more than capable.

for the record, I really wish they made a smaller urban g/s, like an 650 or 800 that I can muscle around. The nine-T’s are great but way too heavy for what I want out of a scrambler-lite bike.

Because of the hundred pounds of dry goods stacked on your head or due one of the four other passengers knee is lodged in it?  It’s all relative.
