Me: “Uhhhh I have a smoke detector that expired five years ago?”

In other news, I installed two carbon monoxide detectors (one in my basement, one in my living room) and a smoke detector in my bedroom. Hopefully I pass the work inspection tomorrow!

Yes, my work owns my house and is my landlord. They call the shots on what I can do with it. Such is life.

Do you get reduced rate for living in a, um, small town? If so, is that discount a taxable befit?  I know nothing of the Canadian tax system.

I have 3 networked smoke detectors, one on each floor of my home which includes the basement. They are getting old, as they were part of the house when it was built. Last year, I put combination smoke/CO detectors in each of the 3 bedrooms and a CO detector in the finished area of the basement which is where the furnace and the gas water heater are located. I’m hoping that this covers my home sufficiently. House is  about 3000 sq. ft.

I think I have 4 smoke detectors installed by the builder and one CO detector.

The only reason my employer owns houses here (and in other very small towns) is because it’s not feasible for us to buy and sell houses every three years, as we’d just be buying and selling to other employees. So I don’t really know how I’d call it a reduced rate, but I pay $450 a month for my house with hydro (or “power”) and water covered since I’m a single person.

There is a northern living tax credit, but I’m not north enough for that. Yet.

That sounds like a lot, but the instructions say you need a smoke detector in every bedroom. So... it’s probably good?

Sounds like it should be enough.

Although it’s funny that most of us, in regards to a pretty important safety device, have no idea how many of them are in our homes.

Yeah. I don’t think I have any trust in the 14 year old builder-installed detectors in the hallways and basement . They do expire as I understand , so having new ones in the bedrooms give me a sense of security.

It’s suggested to replace them every ten years. So it might be time to replace them.

When my detectors expire  they beep every thirty seconds which drives my dog insane.

Same. I had half a mind to chuck it out into the bush.

So, do they just withhold rent From your paycheck  or do you actually have to make a payment every month?

It’s just withheld from my paycheque.

Mine do that, but seems every few minutes, there will be a chirp. Long enough and loud enough to hear it, but not long enough to know what the hell it is and where. Drives me insane for weeks.

I think we have one, maybe two functioning smoke detectors in our whole house. I know it’s bad, but they are all fussy turds.

Well thats a weird job... All my smoke detectors are hard wired. Except I dont have one in the kitchen for some reason.

If it’s not, I’m screwed.

It’s easy to get complacent about stuff that sits in the background. The rule I remember growing up was that you change the battery in your smoke detector when you change your clocks to and from daylight savings time. I’m

Nice perk, guess that helps some with wanting to live in such areas.

I have 1 smoke detector, 1 heat detector, 1 CO - all hardwired.  Also 3 sprinklers - I don’t have a ton of square footage.

My house is a little 96 year old wood structure on stilts. My girlfriend has been known to fall asleep with food in the oven. Yes, I absolutely have smoke detectors. One in the kitchen (center of the house) , one in the detached garage. Also a separate CO detector in the hallway outside the bedrooms.

Only one detector? Damn. Fire regulations in my township border on excessive. I need a smoke detector in every room of the house, minus the bathroom. And I need to have at least one hard wired and one battery powered on every floor.

I have 11 smoke detectors and 2 gas detectors in my 1500 sqft house.

I have about the same. I also worked as a technician for a burg/fire alarm company for about 10 years. They make UL listed wireless smoke detectors for alarm panels connected to a central station, but I stick with the hard wired units. To be nerdy about it all of the smoke detectors also have 135 degree (f) rate of rise sensors so if there is a smokeless fire they will still kick off if the temp increases by 15°F (8.3°C) per minute. Garage, kitchen,  attic, laundry room and furnace area all have 194f fixed heat detectors as the rate of rise ones might be set off inadvertently in areas where temp can fluctuate. Each floor and basement have CO detectors and the siren has a voice module that will advise if it is a burglar alarm, fire, or CO detector. Perhaps a little overkill.

You may want to add a couple more. One crucial area is outside of bedrooms. Often times people close doors and detectors in the rooms might not go off in time.
