A heck of a read over on FP. This is the kind of tech bro galaxy brain thinking that we should be weary of:

I just can’t imagine how nasty the lawsuits are gonna be, because this seems   straight up illegal.

Things like this has me looking at cars like an ‘06 GTO or ‘14 Mustang than a new, highly connected car.

(That and the wife’s theoretical car budget.)

Oh, you KNOW Tesla is (they’re a software company, right?!?) gonna try hard to move a whole lot of functions to the “oh, all you own is a software license, which can’t be transferred” category.

There’s a lot of good reasons this company needs to die, but I’d start right here.

Can you imagine owning a classic 30-year old 560SL and having Benz take the position that your “radio”, “mirror control”, “trunk release” and glove box handle had been “de-featured”?

This is the kind of bullshit that turns me off to new cars, which in turn really disinterests me in hybrids, electric cars, etc . L ast night I was driving home in the 8 fiddy after grad school and beginning to accept my old man status as it was kind of nice having something with an automatic that I could just cruise in. And I started thinking that maybe when I replace the Cruze I will get a used Gen 2 Volt, or maybe even look into a Bolt or a Tesla 3.

Then I read something like then and I’m all like “NOPE. ” Between this and BMW charging subscription for CarPlay (I know they recanted, but mark my words, that’s just testing the waters and it will come back once most if not all manufactures agree with one another to do it ), I’m getting to the point where I have virtually ZERO interest in any new car.

I’m not against EVs, but I am against EV makers being able to do this kind of shit whenever they want to....

This same thing is happening with tractors right now. John Deere can turn your quarter million dollar tractor into a paperweight with the push of a button.

I just thought about something, I now have a perfectly reasonable excuse to low ball any used Tesla I’d consider buying.

Seller: it has..

Me (cutting in): no it doesn’t, the second Tesla sees you sold it they'll rip those features out over the air

——-

you know, I’ve thought about finding a ‘90s car I’d always wanted and learn how to restore it. The idea is looking better and better everyday..

Fuck subscriptions. Every goddamn company is trying to move to this model if they can because “millennials” or some shit. It’s not because of millennials,  it’s because they’re greedy and want eternal revenue streams. And good luck canceling them.

I’ve read about that, and meant to ask my cousin about it at Christmas.  He farms a few hundred acres and owns several Deere’s.  I’d love to hear his take on it, though knowing him he either A) has older models that they can’t do this to and will just refuse to upgrade or B) has already figured out workarounds.

It will never exist, but all I want is like...the EV version of a base trim Hyundai Accent or something with no fancy gizmos... just A/C, actual KNOBS AND BUTTONS for controls and cruise control. I don’t need any fancy crap. Just give me a simple, reliable basic car....except with an EV drivetrain.

Well... we knew this would happen eventually... or at least should have. Also can we talk about how a car with 16k miles needed a new screen, new air springs, new ball joints, and new tie rods? Either those were some serious 16k miles or that this was a fabulous piece of shit Friday car.

I’m wondering if it will reach class action status.  All those Tesla users talk on forums.  It will come out just how many have had this happen, and it will be easier to organize.

The features likely weren’t a $8k cost adder for the selling dealer. I couldn’t care less about the used Tesla market but I can’t imagine the FSD features adding more than a couple thousand over a non-FSD car of the same age. Options don’t often have a huge amount of influence into used car prices.

Think I can get them to bring the Nobe here...maybe give it air bags, a less fancy interior and cheaper price and more range? :P

https://mynobe.com/

I love the fact the interior is minimalist with normal controls like sliders for the HVAC and normal gauges rather than touchscreens...

02/06/2020 at 20:46

Kinja'd!!!0

True, but a used car that was sold with a feature that was later removed.  Same as if you bought a used car with GPS and the manufacturer did a software update that bricked it after you drove it off the lot.  The feature was a basis for the purchase price.  But if Tesla wants to go this route with their used cars, then the next buyers should understand they shouldn’t factor in any software features as actual features.  And adjust the price down accordingly.

If you don’t mind being antisocial about passengers, an EM solo might be an easier starting point

https://electrameccanica.com/

price’s anticipated at under US$20k, interior is already less fancy , only have to get it here from Canada.

All that said, the Nobe has to be the most attractive 3 wheeled vehicle I’ve ever seen..

As long As the sale price reflects the decontenting then it’s all okay,  like how bmws out of warranty resale dives off a cliff.  It’s just going to take some time before the buying public gets wise to this bs

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > Thisismydisplayname
02/06/2020 at 21:13

Kinja'd!!!0

But it goes beyond that. It’s not acceptable to “decontent” a car once it’s sold. It doesn’t belong to Tesla after that. The dealer bought the car when it had a feature. He deserves to get what he paid for. He might not have bought it if he knew it was going to have stuff repossessed.

Kinja'd!!! Snuze: Needs another Swede > Chariotoflove

Kinja'd!!!1

Thats the most F’d up part. As I understand it the dealer bought it with features in tact, the guy bought it, and then Tesla neutered it.

Regardless, I dont like the idea of anyone ever having the capability to OTA neuter my car.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > Snuze: Needs another Swede
02/06/2020 at 21:20

Kinja'd!!!0

I think the dealer bought it, Tesla OTA removed the features without the dealer’s knowledge, them the customer bought it and found out later that the features on the window sticker weren’t there. Still just as F’d up whether it’s the dealer or the customer that got screwed. In my view, both were violated.

So there has been an increasingly huge market for older tractors for the last 10-15 years now because of that.

I spent some time in the Ag world and once saw a John Deere dealer grenade a tractor in the middle of harvest by trying to do “ a quick 5 minute update”. They ended up spending a lot of money and man-hours trying to make it right during the busiest time of the year.

Okay, sober now, and you are right. Though it seems like the used car dealer was not aware of Teslas actions and sold the car in good faith, believing it had all the features it was supposed to have.

I think that’s the big disconnect. If Tesla wants to play this game, fine, but they need to tell the dealer and let people know upfront that the features will be disabled and they have to pay a seperate fee to Tesla to reactivate them. It’s slimy, sure, but at least it would be honest. What Tesla did is both slimy AND dishonest if that’s indeed how it played out .

That’s crazy, and sucks for that poor farmer.

Maybe I’m turning into an old man, but I feel like I understand tech implementation less and less.  I love certain things, like my smartphone - I love having the sum of world knowledge available at my fingertips anytime, anywhere. But I’m not sure why a fridge or light bulbs need WiFi.
