Toby's First Unscheduled Vet Visit

Came home from the gym yesterday morning to Toby less than excited than he normally was. I assumed he was tired since it was 6:30AM. As I unpacked and changed, I hear him whimpering while he scratches his ear. A quick look sees some scabbing on the inside of his one year. There’s no blood or other fluid, but it is more oily than normal. Being the overbearing dog dad I am, I took a personal day off of work and got him to the vet.

Good news, Toby almost doubled his weight since we got him! A hefty 53lbs now. He still hates the vet, except when the doc’s feed him canned cheese. He would only stop crying if I carried him like a baby.

Turned out to be a bacteria infection. Not sure of the source yet. He gets a bath bi-weekly. His backyard is mostly grass and very few brush. He has to take some medicine, and some treatment cream in his ear twice a day. Little guy is on the road to recovery.

Pro-tip on giving a dog a pill. Take some BBQ sauce and cover the pill in it, then give it to the dog like a treat. It’s easy and works very well.

I hope poor Toby is feeling better in a couple days!

I’ve never had a pet bigger than a goldfish prior to this. I literally thought to myself on the way to the vet, “Am I overreacting?”

Definitely not the healthiest thing, but stuffing the pill in a hot dog chunk works as well, and it completely conceals the pill.

Sure- it’s a pain though. I’ve never had the coat it in BBQ sauce fail - it turns the pill into a treat and they scarf the whole thing without issue.

Not overreacting. That sounds  like a more mild version of the thing that ultimately resulted in the death of my last dog. I’m glad you were able to catch it before it got out of hand.

My mother struggled to give her dog pills for the longest time, tried putting them in just about anything you can imagine - he’d catch on and end up eating the foodstuff and spitting out the pill.

Then one day she discovered that if the just stuck the pill into the back of his mouth and lifted his chin up, he’d swallow anything.
