I did the same thing
for my return trip from Nantucket over the holiday. I had a reservation for the last slow boat out, but decided
after
seeing the weather forecast to go to the dock and ask if I could go as a standby on an earlier trip. I guess it’s easier to do that during the off-season months.

I was trying to explain a Car Ferry to my 6-y-o daughter the other day and her eyes lit up, thinking Car Fairy. Like a mythical creature that brings you a new car in the middle of the night.
I set the record straight: She comes to your house in the middle of the night, takes your car, and leaves you $5.
Daughter, deadpan: That’s good, your car is probably only $5.
Yes, I get it.

Much easier. Except for holidays the boats usually aren’t close to full.
I just left NH way earlier than I needed to to make my reservation, just in case.

Last time we went to Nantucket we nearly missed our ferry. We really underestimated the traffic for late September, plus it was pouring rain. We stopped to pick up my sister in Cambridge, and my wife looked at Waze just to see how we were doing. She said “uh, this has us arriving AFTER the ferry is scheduled to leave?” I drove in ways I’m not proud to admit, and we made it. Barely. Lesson learned.

Oh yeah September can be miserable . I always plan my return trips to arrive for the boat before the one I absolutely need to catch, just in case

That’s a great idea.
It’s funny, we went out for a wedding. The day we arrived was misery. The day of the wedding was beautiful, and the next, even more so - close to 70 and sunny with almost no wind. Really about as good as it gets.
