I wish it was available here.

Kinja'd!!!

Call it the Matrix if you have to toyota, but I think its lovely.

bring it here with the 2.0 and manual combo you can get in the smaller one and I think you’d find it would sell well.

Yup. If it came in a nice teal, or purple then I could my wife into one.

I’ll take a red, or orange one.

you say that but sportwagens sell pretty well with manuals.  Even with the cvt these would sell.

I want that bright blue.

Toyota makes a very pretty red though.

I would be one of those 8 if my Mazda5 6MT needed replacement.

sportwagens: a segment which sells at most 10,000 units/yr

sportwagens with manuals: at most 10% of that.

Toyota would be better served just taking $250 million in cash and lighting it on fire. That way at least they save the time.

look, there’s only two ways to make money on cars. Volume, or premium pricing. B- through D-segment sedans (and wagons, by association) from non-premium brands have to have tons of volume to be profitable. At this point in the compact and midsize segments I’d put firm money on the bet that only Toyota and Honda can make any money on them, and even at 250-300k units a year their margins have to be slim. Other companies are getting out at 150k units/yr. this is a segment where if you’re not Toyota or Honda, incentives rule the day.

If you want to make money selling a sportwagen, your name better goddamn well be BMW, Mercedes, or Audi.  Anyone else doesn’t have a chance.

This is a joke that both 1) will never get old around here, and 2) not get laughed at anywhere else

My gag is always that ANY time Toyota brought the motorcycle guys in to work on an engine design? Exciting stuff happened... Yamaha worked some serious magic on the 2ZZ-GE.

But, hey, I also have a fetish for the SHO and Volvo V8 efforts, for much the same reason...

i had an engineer buddy years ago that bought a Citation X-11.  The brakes never worked right, but there was still a certain “1980s cool” to it.

“motorcycle guys” don’t have the same real-world constraints that car companies do.

It’s not available in Oz either and for a very good reason...RAV4.

If the Corolla wagon came here then a base model with the 2.0 litre engine and manual box would come very close price wise to RAV4 2WD with the 2.0 litre engine and manual box. Once you go mid spec with the hybrid engine and CVT then you’d again be close to the equivalent RAV4.

Now, like the US, Oz loves SUVs. So we’d probably still pick the RAV4 over the wagon. But if we didn’t then I would wager that Toyota Oz would  then loose out in th e profit margin because I be very very surprised if the margin on the RAV4 is much higher than the Corolla. Either of those factors would (and likely have in the past) rule out a Corolla wagon in Oz.

Is 2.0 L turbo the golden sweet spot for engines lately? Seems like EVERYONE has one ... GM, Toyota, VAG, I think Mitsubishi has one even.

I think I’ve seen like three or four Corolla hatchbacks with owners.

Meanwhile, I’ve probably seen at least a few dozen 2020 Corollas already. No Corolla Hybrids on the road, though.
