Guess whose 3- week-old brand new not-reman starter failed this morning? If I replace it, this would be the... probably 5th starter in 3-4 years.
The Jeep is cursed, or there’s something very wonky going on electrically. I have a bunch of stuff I keep to try to troubleshoot, but I didn’t have the opportunity. It’s hard to run a multimeter while starting it myself, and I couldn’t keep the park employee who stopped to help me out long enough to fight my way through the learning curve.
But, at least I got a pretty sunrise photo before I discovered the dead Jeep.
Back to the mechanic tomorrow, at the very least I want him to set up a bypass for me so I can trigger the starter while hammering on it. Of all my stress on this topic, a significant percentage is the fact that I have to find someone to help me every time this happens.

I have nothing helpful to add but that really sucks.

The only thing electrical that would cause a starter failure would be a bad battery or cables. That is the only source of electricity while the starter would be turning. Once the Jeep starts, the starter circuit opens up and cuts power to the starter. I say that to say that nothing from the alternator is really ever making it to the starter. Have you checked the battery (I’m sure you have) and more likely the starter cable and connections that run directly from the battery to the starter.
I guess there could be one other thing, but it would be causing a lot of other issues I’d think. This would be the ground strap from the battery to the engine block. And for that matter, just check all the grounds while you’re at it.

Yeah, Hate those electrical problems. I had a C herokee that would constantly lose battery voltage and I would find it dead. Check all your grounds. Check the main harness as it enters/exits the engine compartment. It’s not the starter. B e methodical.

This guy is a keen electrical diagnostician per my Jeep mechanic , and he spent all day last time trying to find any problems. He fixed one circuit that had been giving me trouble, but couldn’t find any issue with the starter.
Of course, it had failed twice the day before, but wouldn’t fail for him.
Maybe I just have spectacularly bad luck with starters.

Sounds like there’s only one thing to do now: Hemi swap it. It might not get rid of all your problems, but it would have a Hemi.

I spent a whole weekend bumpstarting my manual Accent everywhere once because the starter failed from winter sale rusting a ground cable on it.
Sucked but luckily wasn’t very hard to start at all that way and
I made a game out of it. :P

Yeah- I had a guy tell me about the ground strap as I’m replacing the starter on my ‘96 Plymouth I-don’t-care-avan , but I blew him off- and the new starter worked better, but replacing the battery cables and ground strap fixed the rest . Also maybe your Jeep is just allergic to you?
