I mean, it’s always fun to complain about The Man, I guess. But really they were never under any obligation to give us private blogs to say what we want and unlimited storage to upload whatever. So it’s a little hard for me to get too much into the herb-bashing, etc.

This may ultimately be the best argument for keeping our forum distinct from a commercial interest. There could conceivably come a day when DriveTribe would have to do the same.

If they had been serious about it, we’d have been actually told about the feature, how to use it, and why it was needed BEFORE it was foisted on us (breaking the giant Jenga tower that is Kinja in the process). Instead it was just there one day, with no explanation or expectation. I get that the Herb is worried about the FedGov stripping protections away (an overblown fear, IMHO ), but to half-ass a system, then six weeks later axe all the user blogs smacks of something longer term than just us goofing with the captions, and TBH it’s basically victim blaming to put all this on us, the users.

The mandatory accreditation thing was never for us, it was for the staff writers. G/O felt like the staff writers were sometimes too loose with photo credits so they forced it for all images. Since we in Oppo get the same editing tools as the staff blogs we had to deal with it too. G/O didn’t give a shit about whether we properly used it though. If they did it would’ve been forced on photos in comments as well.

What I’ve heard is G/O’s been wanting to axe the user blogs since the whole Herb thing went down. The potential legislation changes finally gave them an excuse they could point to.

Yep. It’s so, so convenient that this “possible copyright change” (not even a change yet!) nukes all the non-staff blogs that keep calling a herb a herb.
