A lot of us cross post to these blogs, and so it’s conceivable that they could be categories at The Hyphen if they want to continue and haven’t found a home. We do have a politics category now. It could even be renamed to Cigar Lounge if there was consensus to do that.

I think it’s actually quite easy. Now you do have to kind of work on the formatting but you can add mods which is nice and allows for several people to post and there a ton of options. Kristinbytes and C’est la vie are doing our heavy lifting and I think Spaced99 is really good at setting it up too and will work on our formatting too--so I would ask them. I did set up my own blogspot to import some stuff over and it’s really user friendly.

After talking with the main mod for Hackerspace, we are happy to let it die, as it’s been dead for so long. We never had a ton of traffic. Most of the traffic we got was when our open thread got published every week onto Lifehacker. Once Hollywood Hogan and Peter Thiel killed off previous ownership, things changed too much, and we had less than a dozen people visit any given week.

Honestly, I think this is the main reason why Kinja failed. There’s all these great sub-blogs about all these great things, many of which I would’ve been very interested in. But I never heard about any of them until now. Like, the equivalent of Oppositelock for trains? A group blog devoted to makers? That sounds awesome! But they never promote anything. There’s just no way to discover things besides word of mouth. Heck, the only reason I know about G roupthink is because of Fur Face Friday. I always knew there were more communities like Oppo on here, but they were so hard to discover that they might as well have been on an alien planet.

It made a fun little secret labyrinth. I’ve found a few smaller subblogs over the years through crossposts, but I’ve never had time to keep up with more than one or two at a time. You’re right, even with all kinja’s quirks, more people would’ve joined these communities if they knew about them. On the other hand, this probably kept the subblogs safer from trolls.

FFF was originally a Groupthink thing, but we spread out a bit. I’ve always posted mine to B acktalk because I didn’t initially have Groupthink authorship, then from force of habit, and because the Backtalk mods were more aggressive about embiggening it (though we can do that ourselves now).

Many of them were originally offshoots of mainpages; Groupthing was part of Jezebel, Oppo was part of Jalopnik, and they were visible in a dropdown menu on the the mainpages. Then they were uncoupled from their mainpages, and they became harder to find. Also harder for trolls to find, so that was a plus.

There was also a period of proliferation, which is where things like Bibliomancy, Art Club and Unapologetically Atheist originated, but a lot of them were very niche and often duplicated content , and became moribund very quickly.

I think Backtalk was an exodus from Crosstalk and/or Clashtalk which were also an exodus from Groupthink which was an offshoot of Jez. Not confusing at all.

FFF posted variously on Groupthink, Oppo? (or was it ODeck?) , Backtalk and Whitenoise that I know of, depending where the week’s author had privileges, and the Snout Selectors came from all of them - guess for a while, Backtalk had more of that volunteer spirit. :P

(But yes, I know I made a point of embiggening the lead image as much as I could on those last two.)

I assume since you are the most wonderful and famous Oppo in the history of kinja blogs, you primarily mean Oppo. I cannot speak for them.

As far as HS goes, Hackerspace will just become a ghost that no one will remember. No need to drag on something no one will ever go back to review.

One of my last received replies has been from the Queen of Oppo, and now I’m pretty damn happy to leave this place. You have meant a lot to everyone around these parts. Thanks for the memories, Stef!
