Racing would be a lot more entertaining if the drivers had to work on their own cars

I remember that race! When I saw that, I was more impressed than you can imagine.

Another Foyt anecdote I was told (growing up in Indy). There was a dust up involving  a couple of Foyt’s staff at their hotel before the 500. The cops were called. Foyt arrived, asked the officers about the situation. They told him. He then told them he’d handle it. So they left. They knew he would.

I have no confirmation of the accuracy of this story, but I choose to believe it.

that was the year Kevin Cogan caused a pileup as the green flag fell, AJ was one of the victims, after a few laps his shift linkage bound up and he came into the pits and couldn’t get the mechanic to un derstand what needed to be done. so he got out of the car and grabbed a hammer and a long screwdriver and went to “adjusting” right after the wreck he was being interviewed on what happened and went on a rant about “these young guys don’t know what their doing, he lost control and slammed into me” interviewer, “who hit you?” AJ, “ Coogin!”
