Dealership just told me the transfer case and front driveshaft are failing, quoted me $3600.

Fortunately I got an extended powertrain warranty. Thank goodness.

I am not surprised in any way and I suspect you aren’t either. Your reliable car is already broken but you won’t be paying for it at least.

When you said you bought one finally, some bemoaned the end of J eep search posts, but I knew it was just the beginning of even more Jeep posts...

We’ll see. I’m not sure my activity is going to survive the end of  Kinja.

Wouldn’t be a Jeep without drivetrain surprises. I As sume the dealership is planning to replace both units (they typically avoid servicing components) or is that price for some sort of rebuild to both assemblies?

Some even say that your activity IS the reason of the end of the Kinjaverse .

Neither part should be very expensive so I’m assuming most of that was labor , but I didn’t find out what the dealership was proposing because my brain shut down briefly .

I’m taking it back to the car lot; they’ll do it within the labor costs the warranty will cover.

Yep.

My 3rd transmission is leaking more and more each day. Probably have to tighten all the fittings or something.

I should have kept the Jeep search going forever. Maybe if I start posting again about manual XJs we’ll get a reprieve.

Maybe it’s time to start searching for manual 4-runners??

How long is the power train coverage? I know a few dealers that do lifetime power train warranties on used vehicles. It sounds like if I ever shop for a Jeep that’s where I’d want to shop.

First your car went Joooooop but then the warranty went Jeeeeeep.

Hopefully the fix is good for some years.

How many miles/years does that have on it?

That would be sad, but I understand.

This was 6 months/7k miles paid for by the lot. I’ll ask whether it’s possible for me  to extend that after the purchase, since I’m off to such a great start.

145k miles, and it’s about 17 years old.

I suspect I’ll get lonely quickly and resume, even if I do let things lapse at first.

Best Jeep is a Toyota “insert your model here”.

That is just crappy luck my friend.

I invited this. My rule is always get a PPI but after every previous  PPI told me things I could already deduce for myself, combined with the fact I knew I’d have a warranty on the really expensive stuff, I decided to skip this one.

My front shaft had failed, and somehow blow out the front Half  of the transfer case, on the highway.  So it’s good you caught it.

If you’re lucky , new parts will be used and not rebuilds, unless you were going to a driveline shop, the dealer won't rebuild a transfer case as well new or a dedicated shop.

My theory is that after 15 years you are on the wrong side of the value wave and that cost of ownership needs to be cost of repair....  Sounds like you are there and somebody is offering the warranty. BONUS~!
