I was going to post about my weekend trip which included renting a small camper trailer as weather is cooling down . . . But I’ll just say farewell to Oppo.

I have enjoyed having a place to share car interests and off topic items, and not trying to be an auto journalist. Hopefully our landing spot will do that again and more. I’ll join in again eventually.

Safe travels wagon buddy. How does the Subie do when towing?

The trailer was about 2,000 pounds, and the Outback XT had no issue at all accelerating or braking. However, any bump caused the trailer to yank the car forward and back.

It’s been a long time since I towe d anything, and maybe this is normal, but it meant that we stopped thinking about buying a trailer for ourselves.

Nice grille! Is it an OEM accessory or from someone aftermarket?

OEM accessory: "Turbo" grille, although not exclusively available on the XT.

Yeah, pretty much anything light gets bounced around towing something above 1000 lbs, even if bUt mY cAR Can dO TrUCk sTUFf people don’t want to admit it.   Even my 4Runner gets bounced around by a utility trailer.

Details on that camper? I’m a sucker for the fiberglass campers!

I’ll probably do more of a post on one of the other spaces when I have time to set up. The trailer is called a GoBE, pretty nice, very adjustable interior that suits our minimalist needs, and allowed us a good night’s sleep .

You were out in my neck of the (literal) woods and didn’t say howdy? I like the trailer. I’m kind of long-term looking for one to tow behind the Galaxie, but I’m a little torn on getting something modern or something with the right look.

As NuOppo (Nuppoo?) alternatives go, I’ve been liking DriveTribe so far.

If I ever set up camp in Black Mountain, I’ll do my best to say hello. We tend to go straight into the woods west of Asheville and stay there for the most part.

I was starting to seriously think of purchasing the trailer, and was happy to be able to rent to see how it suited me. The camper is great, except that I would want a heavier tow vehicle to smooth out the ride dynamics . . . at which point I figure that maybe a cargo  van for camping would be better. Now I’m in full Oppo mode of considering a million possible vehicle options, even though I really just shouldn’t.

I haven’t towed anything behind the Galaxie yet, but it’s got about 400lb, a foot of wheelbase, and a foot and a half of length on the Subaru, so it probably should manage things alright. Though having a long tail to give the camper more leverage may be good or bad.

There isn’t an off-the-shelf trailer hitch available for it... except there is: a Kia Sportage trailer hitch is the right frame rail width and has the right drop, flange orientation, and so on, so it’s really just waiting on me to buy one.

Also, the Galaxie has a big trunk. And 180+hp.

That’s pretty funny that the Kia Sportage will provide you with the right hitch. It would be very interesting to find out what the towing dynamics would be with the Galaxie.

BOF sedans, BOF crossovers... same thing, right?

It’s low and wide, which should make up for a multitude of sins.

I’ll tell you what would tow things great is the ‘59 Lincoln, at another foot plus in wheelbase and another foot and a half longer, three tons, 375hp...

However, it’s a unibody and has ClubWagon-like amounts of rear overhang , so there might be some unforeseen hilarities.
